    Stebbo,

Glad to hear it. The 50 1.8 is so cheap that, to be honest, every one should have one in their kit. For me, if I could do it over again, I would go with the more expensive 1.4 model as the lack of USM on the 'plastic fantastic' annoys, but, for the money, the IQ is hard to beat.

Flickr has 8000 pics taken with the lens. Take a look at what it can do.

That's perfect, I didn't know you could search by lens, but that has answered a few questions for me.

I'm helping a friends band by taking some live promo shots soon, so this lens looks perfect. I'll post the results when I have them

      Thanks again.

I use the 1.8 50mm all the time, it does feel cheep and is slow to focus\noisey, but the image quality is fantastic. It's a bargin too!

Well I bought an SB-600 flash today. I'll hopefully post some pics taken with its aid soon.

so what decides how quick the lens focusses? i've never really looked into it but i assume this is all to do with the bits and bobs inside the lens right? how much quicker than a standard lens (on average, let's say) can they get? i've no reference point see.

There isn't much difference really, I mean a cheap lens will still autofocus in much under a second but a pro-class is almost instant. You do notice the difference however. Also the better technology is almost silent.

Yes, the noise puts me off. You have a state of the art Canon DSLR and a noisy piece of Malaysian plastic attached to the end. LOL. As stated, it takes super pics though

I have been spoiled by Canon's USM lenses.

                  Nice shot Richard!

I ordered a print blown onto canvas for a birthday present yesterday. I'm really intrigued to see how it comes out.

Off to the butterfly farm today with my friend and his baby. Should be lots of interesting photo-ops - I had a great time with my macro lens last time I went.

Thank you, sir. I added three more.

inspired, i've now ben playing with the 2 lenses i've got, the standard 18-55mm that came with my 350d and the 28-105mm that came with my previous 35mm slr. settings now make sense in my head thanks to that little table you posted with apertures on the other page richard... cheers for that.

i'm now off out to go take some shots of my lovely harrogate.

Yes, the f/ numbers defy logic at first as how can small number mean a bigger hole but it's just a ratio of focal length vs aperture diameter.

I took about 400 shots today. Very busy! Here's one of them:

                          And here's some more!

Splashed out a bit yesterday. In addition to the flash I've ordered a Nikon D80 and a new lens: the Nikon 55-200mm AFS VR.

I'm most excited about getting the flash. Hopefully everything will arrive tomorrow
