Ish, unless there is some amazing feature or you can get an unusual angle a landscape shot is always hard to make interesting. Some can be saved by a dramatic sky but if it's all blue or all cloudy it can prove hard.

The sky def helped in this one. Same with this one with added shadow interest. Or try something a little different.

In summary, good landscape shots are dead hard and I don't really know much about taking a good one.

The Rule of thirds applies to landscapes. Sky or ground...whichever is most important should take two thirds of image. Horizon shouldn't be in the middle of the picture.

But rules are there to be broken. Just because a shot uses thirds or doesn't wont make it any better (consciously) in my book.

It's an aid to composition, the same as the "Z factor" of an image - there's no requirement to follow it, it's just something to think about.

I wasn't implying that it has to be followed. However, you might be surprised how much it does consciously help images.

I've created an NTSC-UK group on flickr.com - I'm not sure how useful it'll be given we've got this thread, but it might make sharing and commenting on pics a little more organised.

Nice one, kept meaning to do that myself...but being a lazy git prevailed.

Nice one, joined, what sort of pics are going in there? Just anything we'd share here?

Yeah, anything that you think is worth sharing I guess - it'll make for easy browsing, for anyone with a flickr account.

Thanks for the group invite Marty.

I have finally sorted out all my photos after spending yesterday afternoon and this morning to cut them down from 700(!) to 20 photos to put up on flickr.

I'm quite happy with them but because the sunset looks very similar in the vast majority of the photos (orange / warm skies) it was easier to pick them out.

Is it ideal to leave the sunset photos as they are (shadowy / dark foreground) or brighten up the foreground (and sky) at the same time?

Your choice! Experiment and see what works.

Got some nice shots there. Love the blue on the anchor.

And its nice to have an image named in my honour

You have some cracking shots there, mate. Well done! Great descriptions too. I feel like I want to take a trip back to Blighty......
