Those are great smoke especially like the black lab photo, black dogs are really hard to capture and the expression on his face is priceless.

    A few more from me.

I was sat at a restaurant for this one so had to add lib for the 15 second exposure and put my camera on two balanced glasses, problem is i don't have photoshop at the moment and so can't straighten the horizon...

Thanks TommyG. I have to admit (and I don't want this to turn into a mutual love-in...) but it's thanks to you guys and this thread that I've really got into photography recently and bought a half-decent camera. All of your photos used to inspire me every day and I wanted to be able to contribute too. So for all of you regulars on this thread - thank you.

      A few more from me:

So i've been thinking today about selling the G9 and getting a DSLR. My budget would be around the ?500 pound mark. The new Nikon D3000 is out soon and looks to be quite good but then there's also the Nikon D5000 and the Canon 500D which i'd be tempted to stretch to.

        Any thought or ideas?

            Oh noes!

Seriously! How come? And what did you sell?

I like my holiday/fun shots and carrying a giant DSLR was quite invonvienient for me. That combined with the standard lens on having about the equivalent of a 2x zoom made getting lots of shots I wanted impossible without carrying around more lenses which became even more impractical for the more casual useage I had.

Your shots made me choose a G9, the only things I'm missing a bit are the burst fire mode and the lens twisting to focus , as well as the photos being a little grained in darker bits.
I'm very pleased with my decision to switch though

Are you going to use film or slides?
Shooting mostly B&W film - easy to process yourself. Might do some slide stuff at some point, but I don't have any slide film in the fridge at the mo.

                    I like my B&W tho:

HaHa those are all brilliant but I love the mearcats one just because i think they are ace little creatures and the expression on the lama is hilarious. Also I really like the otter one but I think the sleeping otter on your flickr is better/cuter. Great stuff though!

How close were you to the plane there ginger and how loud must it have been!? Great shot.

Awesome B & W Marty, I love the way it carries my eye through the photo, if that makes sense?

Some Bees where feeding off the lavender in the garden yesterday so i snapped a couple of shots. Quite pleased with the result as it was the first time i'd really adjusted the flash output to get the desired results.

What do you guys think though. Trimmed or not trimmed?

I'm not much of a photographer, fellas, but I can appreciated some of the beautiful images I've seen in this thread. Top stuff.

My girlfriend got a spanking new camera yesterday. Today I have borrowed it on the sly whilst she works - bo!

Been wanting to take a nice photo for my website. Came up with this mundane, but for me, beautiful shot of my modified Speak & Spell rigged up to my mixer I really don't know what I was doing, but I like the abstract mundane vibe of it.

you can get quite close to the end of the runway at Brum, as for the noise it was probably just a bit noisier than most aircraft. It's that quick you don't really notice it. If it was Concorde i'd probably be deaf now!

As for the crop/no-crop, I think both work well. The detail in the crop looks better, but the background in the others add to the image also.

                          Talking of macro.......

                          Hoverfly macro fail!

Just snapped this little critter in the back garden. It's Marco week for me lol

Tommy - your question about cropped or not cropped:
1st - cropped. The background is a distraction (not a bad one by any means) so the crop gets in to the good stuff.
2nd - non-cropped. The background is excellent and gives a real sense of place. I would probably crop it ever so slightly however and also clone out the green grass on the right hand side.

GT - that hoverfly pic is strangely brilliant

Guess what - I've had a pic authorised on iStock!!!! It's got a five star rating too, although nobody has bought it

Something i've thought about after seeing Tommy's cropped pictures: Is it possible to create a fake sense of zoom if you crop an image? I know the picture would be smaller in size, but Tommy has the exact same picture in the non and cropped pictures and they are the same size due to them being posted in small size on here. Except the cropped one looks like you've got right up close to the subject.
