It's quite likely that you could simply extrapolate out the models to their latest versions on something like amazon.co.uk or warehouseexpress.com. For what it's worth, Canon's compacts have always been really solid buys, and Panasonic seems to be producing some top-notch cameras too.

Yeah my compact is pretty good. It's a Samsung but I can't remember the model number - will let you know later today...

This is the one I have. Takes great shots and has lots of options. Was £190 until recently so it's quite the bargain.

Ended up buying a Canon A480 from the pirates favourite shop, got a 4gb memory card and a lowepro case for £125, thanks for the advice chaps

I don't want to be a downer, but the focal lengths aren't all that similar! Did you find yourself exclusively using the long end of your Sigma?

Loving the recent shots - HaHaUK that connect4\london shot is the best I've seen in a while. Superb


First proper iPhone shot. Edited it in-phone with the Camera Bag app. I don't like using the phone to take shots (for such a user-friendly device I find it extremely awkward to hold when taking photos) but the quality is surprisingly good.

My 5D has been in repair for a while (just got it back today!) so I used my trusty 400D and ye olde 28mm f/1.8 for that shot. The detail isn't really all there if you look at the original, but the light was so nice right then. The trees in the background also formed a really nice layer, so it just stood out as a good composition. Really, it was just a matter of being the in the right place at the right time, and pointing my camera in the right direction!

Pete, that tiger shot is lovely, and I really like the sad racoon - that's actually really heartbreaking. The lock sitting there so proud really drums it home.

In my experience being in the right place at the right time counts for 95% of good shots! You think the skill of photography is not controlling the camera, but predicting where is going to be the best spot?

It really was very sad looking. It sat there for ages looking depressed, occasionally going mental as it clawed at the door. Never felt so unconfortable at a zoo.

Got this fantastic little app the other day for my iphone that I'm sure is a must for anybody that likes taking photos.

Basically it logs your position via the iphone's GPS at set intervals then creates a log file so when you get home to process your photos on your computer you can embed the location data into your photos so you have an accurate representation of where on earth they were taken.
It works really well (\i'm using it in combination with geosetter)

I'm really looking forward to using it when I go on holiday
