This is a little off-piste but I've just read an article about the minor celebrity/model Annabel Giles who sadly died of a brain tumour about a year ago aged just 64.
According to the article she left a "..huge sum..." to her two children with her estate valued at around £770,000 which, after costs and HMRC taking their obscene cut: 40% left around £430,000 to be shared between each of them.
That is not a "huge sum". Actually it is very modest as chances are if she lived in the Home Counties or, of course, London that would likely mean she was not cash rich by any measure and most of what was left was a property (family home?) which will have had to be sold just to be able to pay HMRC their cut.
Been there which is why this triggered me.
Apparently she was even struggling financially in the late 80s and 90s having to work outside the media celebrity world just to pay the bills.
Point is that whilst £200,000+ each is not to be sneezed at it won't buy you a house in London or most places in the SE either, it certainly won't set you up for life and is genuinely not a "huge sum" to leave behind.
I'd say "huge" only starts to apply when, after HMRC have had their pound of flesh, you're left with at least £1m.Last edited by fallenangle; 29-11-2024, 03:36.Comment
