Chico might get some peace and quiet now, not being kept awake by the 24 hour party hamster's squeaky wheel. Groucho is joining the 'strip' in the back garden of dug up turf, with a commemorative pot plant sitting on top. Damn strip gets a foot longer every year. When we move from this house, the new owner is going to encounter a row of tiny boxes under the ground at one side of the garden.

      Duly noted!

Liking the names you choose though, so long may it continue. May I suggest Ché and Balrog for the next installments? SuBo is probably too obvious to consider.
I'm always open to pet name ideas, thanks to the high turnover rate at chez prinny. The three cats are called Laurel, Hardy and Bilko. After Chico and Groucho, I think a return to videogame names is indeed in order.

All my pets are rock star pets. Great names, live fast, die young.

Sorry to hear about Groucho's passing mate. The thing about animals of all kinds is that when u spend a bit of time with them u really do notice that they have their own little characters, which makes each 1 unique & special. It also makes it that much harder when they do leave this world.

        RIP Groucho

          Cheers.

It's all true - in the future I'll probably look back at this thread and think it was overly sentimental and maybe a bit mawkish, and I can totally get why people think 'it's only a rodent, get a grip,' but it's part of your life, your status quo, and if it gets shook up it does give you a bad time, no matter how small. I remember all my hamsters and their traits, so they do leave an impression.

It's eerily quiet in this room. Normally I'd be battling to concentrate with that wheel squeaking behind me!

It would freak you out if it was squeaking behind you.

Indeed. A lose - lose situation.

I was messed up when my first hamster (Conan) died, he was special because he would drink coke from the glass and would sit and stare at you for hours on end. He had many successors, and they all went the same way... but for different reasons - I eventually decided to stop keeping hamsters as they are so death-prone and naturally it hurts to lose a pet.

Not a hammy this time, but this seems to be the nearest suitable depository for pet-related misery.

One of the three guinea pigs this time. Patch. Canny little fella, soft and friendly. Had him out yesterday and he was chipper. Opened the hutch tonight and he was lying cold. Didn't seem to be any noticeable cause - no diahorrea or anything - but 4 years is a pretty standard age for a piggy I guess. The other two looked very forlorn, but tbh Patch looked peaceful, so hopefully quick and painless. Missus is very sad as she bought the two black ones as a pair, they've been inseparable.

Twenty years since my first pet died, and it never gets any easier

Stripe, his bro, looks very sad They were never apart.

                          How annoyingly sudden and unexpected.

                            Ahhh bummer. Sorry prinny mate.

                              Tusen takk!

I've got four blurry photographs and my deplorably inadequate and fuzzy brain as an aide memoire. FAIL.

Patch was a real character. He was always interested in what you were doing, excited to see you, and when I used to throw carrots in he'd grab them off the others and horde them in a corner. In the sun he and Stripe would lie against each other, flat out. Very cute. See, I should have took a photo of that. It was always funny and cute to watch.

It just isn't the same only having two of them scuttling around. I've checked again and Stripe is just sitting in the hay facing the wall of the cage, hardly moving. He really looks broken up about it.

The last of the Prinnysquad Hamster Corp has perished. Cheeky Chico has fallen.

He's lasted 18 months longer than his lunatic rockstar brother Groucho. At least 2 years 4 months old, the longest yet. Poor little sod was a right trooper. Last summer we noticed he had something growing in his ear. We took him to the vet and he said he had a tumour growing out of his ear canal, which was inoperable. It looked really awkward and unpleasant. Over the past 6 months it got bigger, very big in fact, and he had a tumour on his chest, but didn't seem to be in pain or let it bother him. I didn't think he'd last longer than a few weeks as he was almost two years old at that point, but he defied everything and kept plugging away, chopping goodies and going on mad runs around the room. I think he's just died of old age, he seemed to have trouble eating and drinking yesterday, and today he's went to sleep and not woken up

The last of the Corp. A sad night
