Still waiting for feedback for the first interview so still unsure why I didn't get it unless there were 10 more qualified people and only 9 jobs

During the second interview it was stopped by the interviewer and I was asked why I wanted a lowly position considering how strong my CV was especially in the telecoms world of writing service level agreements

Told them that I didn't a need managerial position anymore and my service pension was being paid to me from July so I wanted a technical job just to keep my hand in and at least keep the old mind ticking over rather than sitting behind a desk

So the reason why I didn't think it went so well and it seemed a lot more formal that the first interview

Received my service retirement report and its the best report I've ever had which basically says I should be teaching core telecoms skills or running a department

Received my offer of employment by email which I have to respond by tomorrow - training starts 1st August

Just graduated from university with a Computer Science degree and had my first evening of job hunting online. Not sure if I'm being easily intimidated but the job specs I'm seeing for junior or graduate level software development are making my head spin, although these seem to be from larger firms. I think I'd rather work somewhere small and more close-knit, where I can get a wider range of experience. Internships are always an option but I'm concerned that I might be considered a bit old for one at 31!

Well started with BT openreach Thursday just gone and over the next couple of weeks have lots of traveling to stoke to complete my new safety and roads act and learn my craft as a cabler jointer for fibre

But since I was retired in July I applied for various things and not heard back, but now that I have a job everything is starting to come in and unsure how its seen by a civilian employer if it looks like I'm looking for work elsewhere especially if Ive just started with a company

Tesco have asked me to go for a one week placement as a department manager in my local town which would be superb and Aldi called today asking me instore on Friday for a managers conference in a local store so in a bit of a quandry

In my experience they always ask for much more than they actually need. If you. Meet half the criteria you should apply. Just my opinion

Got head hunted recently and the job description wanted a phd in maths. Told them I didn't even have a degree in the subject and they brushed that aside. Best of luck. I like smaller firms. More creative freedom and less bull****.

How do people get headhunted? Is it mainly word of mouth or LinkedIn or something? One of our supervisors at the hotel was apparently headhunted by the spa down the street and lured away with better pay and I didn't quite get how.

Often when people say they were headhunted, they mean a recruitment agency called their place of work.

It's more like head fishing than headhunting, but people like to make themselves sound more important.

Often yes but this wasn't an agency it was the head of their development team. I've been a software engineer for 20 years. Been headhunted twice lol.

I've been approached via LinkedIn a few times, I think if it isn't through major channels you have to be in a specialized field. Although with you mentioning being headhunted by a spa... maybe anything is possible.

                      None taken Boris

Locally headhunting takes place just because of word of mouth. Estate agents can easily spot that anither agent is doing better than them and find out who is responsible and nab them.

Oops, didn't see this until now. :/

Quite a lot of people seem to share that opinion. I'm inclined to agree, as a friend of mine just got a dev job with no prior object-oriented programming experience but was hired anyway. I shouldn't be so easily deterred but I'm also not the most confident of people, despite getting better grades than my currently-employed classmates. Waiving a PhD in Maths is quite funny though. It does make you wonder why they'd say that it was necessary in the first place.

Completely agree with the "less bull****" element of a smaller company too. The management structure is far too slow to react where I'm currently working part-time, as even simple requests for things like signage are met with a flurry of silly excuses and nothing ever happens as a result of informed input from the general staff.

Hmm, I have a telephone interview lined up for a junior web development position some time next week. Anybody here work in that field?

I get the feeling that there may be redundancies being filed out soon where i work. Its been mentioned twice in the last 3 months if our sales didn't improve, & they haven't.
Does anyone know if there is a standard amount handed out if you take redundancy, or is the amount based on the business you work for?

The missus is pushing me to take a job as a window frame assembler, which I'm not happy about tbh. Long hrs & really sh1tty pay, plus its a local business who are rugby obsessed tw@ts which i will not get along with

I do but only just saw this. How did it go / when is it?

It went reasonably well. About five minutes in he admitted that he'd run out of questions and we just chatted about retro gaming for the next ten minutes.

I had an all day assessment centre lined up but their HR person has been very vague and hasn't gotten back to me in the last couple of weeks. I was a bit perplexed as I explained that I didn't have backend web development experience during the telephone interview (it was listed as desirable but non-essential on the job ad) and I was told that it wasn't an issue as I'd be trained if I got the job. When I got the details of the assessment day through it included a 3.5 hour test on backend web development, so I don't know what happened there.
