A minor triumph yesterday on the Keswick trip.
In Booths, they had some bottles of Bah Humbug, so to make certain that it didn't break on the way home a 'la Hook Norton a few months ago, I bought 12 bottles.
Got 6 newbies for Plough Boy's xmas box.
Got a smattering of newbies myself, such as Treacle Stout and Jennings Redbreast.
47 quid spent in Booths then on 29 beers.
Open All Hours was the next port of call.
13 beers snatched (could have been much more, finances willing) - including 6 for Plough Boy.
They had a box full of old pump-clips, so I put about 10 into my basket, thinking they'd be a quid each or something, only to be told at the counter that they were free as long as you made a contribution to the little charity tin. Bugger. If I'd known that I would have took them all.
On the way home, we stopped off at Barnard Castle Morrisons and I found a single new beer there too.
And they had a cut-off barrel labelled 'guest beer, Bah Humbug', but it was full of cider so I presume they'd run out. Shame cos I would have grabbed another 8 bottles to make it a nice round 20.
In Keswick itself, I had a couple of halves in the Lake Road Inn:
Robinson's Double Hop - 5% - 8/10, quite licquoricey, downed with abandon.
Robinson's Unicorn - 4.2% - 8/10, totally different to the above, had quite a cutting bitterness but went well with the chips
Then a swift pint in the Oddfellows Arms:
Jenning's Redbreast - 4.5% - 8.5/10, very, very pleasant. Bland at first but got better down the glass. Quite a subtle build-up of aftertaste, by the end of it I'd liked to have had another, but I've got a couple of bottles of it so it'll be nice to compare.
Coming out of Keswick, we came onto the A66 right in front of a rozzer. Not liking the thought of being tailed by this **** for miles and miles one little bit, we pulled into Threlkeld a few miles up the road and went into the Horse and Farrier for a swift half:
Titanic Iceberg - 4.1% - 8/10, a very summery, breezy beer, totally out-of-place but pleasant nonetheless. A welcome end to the cask beers for the day, golden in colour and only very slightly bitter.
Quality day! The bottles have now completely taken over the downstairs toilet, and huge amounts of space in the kitchen.
