I'm very undecided on this matter, but I did listen to Five Live's interview with MacAskill and I was quite impressed by his rationale, and the apparent sincerity of his reasoning.

I hope England is run over by muslims- that is what they deserve for this outrage
I do like how England gets to take the fall for Scotland though, so I'll let it go.
As for boycotting Scotland, hmmmm, Walkers shortbread must be worried.

"We usually visit Manchester area once every two years - family of 4 - spend approximately $8000 each visit. No more. Going to Ireland. You Scots can ram it up your fat haggis asses from here on. Nothing made in Scotland will ever be bought by us again. Rich Reitz Pittstown, NJ, USA"
He visits Manchester, but doesn't even know what country it's in.

I'm torn over the matter (I can see both sides of the argument), but the reaction from Americans and the whole 'Boycott Scotland' movement is irksome, especially seeing as the US are experts at under-the-table deals.
The hatred being thrown towards Scotland (and by proxy, England, it seems) can only create a counter-hatred directed towards Americans. Ultimately this whole affair proves that hatred breeds further hatred.

Who cares that Scotch soldiers have died in Iraq and Afghanistan? Not enough for me!

Bloody hell- having read this thread, I think we should have an 'Emotive Subjects' sticky where people can vent their righteous indignation to their heart's content.
Bit puzzled though by some of the comments that mention 'the big man upstairs' (*love* that euphemism by the way) is ultimately punishing this man. That'll be the same infinitely compassionate, omniscient, omnipotent big man upstairs who allowed 270 innocent people to die in a terrorist attack then? Oh yes sorry, forgot, man's free will is to blame when things go wrong and god is responsible for all the good stuff. 'God' has got absolutely nothing to do with any of this.

Americans are baying for blood on this one. What a surprise. The Scottish familes have generally said that they were unsure of the conviction anyway. The US families were just wanting revenge. The problem is, these events are thought to be revenge attacks - this appears to be the problem, they do not know what the US does in their name around the world. Lockerbie happened in the same year that the US Military shot down, pure cold blood, an airliner flying in foreign airspace. Apparently, they thought it was an F-14 (the planes in Top Gun)....
We are told that US torture should not be publicised as that will enrage and encourage the terrorists, how come showing compassion does the same thing?
If the US wants to boycott Scotland, it may cause some financial hardship. Imagine if we all boycotted them for funding the IRA bombing campaign in the UK for decades.

apparently USA accounts for 15% of our annual tourism trade, so if they all decided to boycott Scotland its not that bad (according to the Scotsman)
If the Asian Market decided to boycott stuff like Whiskey then i think that would have more of an effect to cripple the Scottish economyLast edited by buster_broon; 24-08-2009, 12:38.

Isn't it only something like 9-10% of Americans who actually travel abroad anyway?
Granted that could be quite a high number in a county that size but when I last checked the petition linked to earlier only had around 400 signatures. Unless the momentum picks up at a rapid pace, then I don't think it's going to dent that Scottish economy too much.
