    Glasses frames and lenses?

Basically, I've just had the frame of my glasses break so need to get a new pair.

As I've recently lost my job and am(hopefully) temporarily unemployed, how much will I have to pay for my new frames and lenses? Will it be the same as if I was working? I've had my current classes since I was about 17 so 12 years and can't remember how much they cost.

So anyone had to get new glasses lately?

You've had a pair of Glasses for 12 years? Bloody hell!!

I literally just paid for mine last week, New frames and lenses for both normal glasses and sunglasses = £130.

      Yeah. I know it's a long time.

Who do the best deals? I've had an eye test, which I luckily got paid for by my old employers as they also paid for my safety glasses, so I have my prescription and don't need another test as it was only done a few months ago.

Since I wear my glasses pretty much all the time I go for the designer frames but to this day I'm pissd off at how much they cost.

Checked Specsavers for the first time the other day and I think their range is quite limited for designer brands. Even so 2 pairs plus the lenses thinned would cost me around 250 there but I think this time I'll go to Vision Express who are rip off merchants but have nicer specs I think.

Some people I know buy them off ebay but I would rather try them on before buying.

Our local store got bought out by Vision Express and I was able to get the deal I got because almost all their frames were "50% off".

I'd personally avoid Specsavers as I've had a bad experience with them before.

Pretty sure if your unemployed & sigining on you can get eye tests & some seleceted frames & lenses for free.
I'd recommend a trip in to town & have a look.

As an aside my current pair of glasses came from Vision Express & cost me just under £500

I've got Oakley Socket 2.0 frames which cost me £250 & then my single vision Oakley lenses were £235 for the slimest lens with anti glare/anti scratch coating.
I still cant believe how much they cost...but I wear them everyday so dont begrudge the money as I may as well wear something I really like.

I need new glasses as these ones are about 6-7 years old, noticed I'm finding it harder to read small text on my TV.

Buying glasses is a pain for me as I've a large head meaning I can only wear ones with longer arms, severly limiting my choice. Then there's the paranoia about if you look silly wearing them, especially as fashion seems to swing between thin and thick frames all the time.

I'm amazed how many people are having the same prescription for so long! I'm of the age where my eyes don't really deteriorate, but I went 4/5 years between my last and this new one, which was *way* too long.

Mine where £380 but fortunately as I work in optics, dispensing glasses so I get a hefty discount.
Ask me anything and I'll try my best to answer.

If you are claiming job seekers or are in receipt if any kind of income support you qualify for an nhs free sight test plus a lump sum towards you glasses. Usually this doesn't cover the cost of a new pair do most opticians top up the amount to let you get a free frame and set of lenses. Expect these to be fairly basic, but hey you'll be able to see.

Maybe try looking for straight sided frames or ask to see whether the sides could be straightend to grip the side of your head as opposed to going behind the ears.
