    Freelance income and tax purposes

I was recently asked to do some one-off freelance work (which I was hesitant to do) and will not do anymore for the forseeable future. I only received £1450 for the invoiced work and am now wondering what I'm supposed to do next? Should I register as self-employed even though I have no intentions of doing anymore freelance work, or is there another route I should go down?

Don't really want to break any laws etc so want to keep everything above board!

Give it to charity? I think you have to register, although filling out your tax return will be dead simple if that's all you've done. It's just a pain actually having to do one if previously you were under the max band and are PAYE.

if you invoiced them, then you should have taken the tax off on the invoice,(and stated it on the invoice, less tax) either 22% or 40% depending on which tax bracket your in for your full time job.

that way the tax is paid by them, and keeps you above board and not needing to set up your own business for one offs.

I know you want to be legit but this really is small beer, if you don't tell the tax office they won't come looking. Just trouser the cash and forget about it.

Yeah, if it's a cheque, cash it, forget it, enjoy it

I was paid by cheque, but the company would only pay out after I sent them an invoice. Wouldn't they submit that themselves for their own tax reasons?
