EDIT..
I can curb the drinking and drugs, I can do that. Its the gambling that is getting out of hand.
What are you habits?
What problems are they causing?
What have you done to control them?

there is a big difference between over indulging and a proper full on addiction, you can scale back one but the other needs proper treatment (proper being whatever works for you).
some people respond to group help such as AA etc, finding solace thru the sharing of others and getting to unburden themselves in confidence, others respond more to 1:1 counselling and inderstanding what is drivnign the issues.
samaritans are just somebody to chat to, quite a misunderstood service (I used to be one years back), they aren't really a cure, just a plaster to help thru a sticky moment or moments.
the path out of this is to decide how big your problems are and try a few different solutions to see what fits.

Jebus' reply to the 'all in moderation' post is sound.
And abigsmurf & mikewl give good advice. I would take their reply's into consideration. Some sensible info there.
...........and to those who are taking the pi55 - you should be ashamed of yourselves. Shadowdancer is in need of genuine help & has taken a huge step in admitting it & telling others on these boards. Its beginning to damage his life & those around him, so lets have a little bit of respect & sensible thought before you post ok.

I think you are in good company here. I'm guessing there are a fair few of us who would describe themselves as obsessive compulsive or having addictive tendencies.
You have done the right thing in admitting it to yourself and take some positive credit for the fact that you want to change. You are over the worst of it if you can now commit fully to changing. Determination is a wonderful incentive if you use it for the right purposes.
Have you thought about volunteer work?

That`s too bad mate. I have a friend who`s brother who is also a mate has a gambling problem. Best way is 1st admitting the problem gamblers anonymous as others have said. With the other things I suggest changing who you hang with, totally else imo it`s gonna circle round and round again. Please speak to yr family too as they can help a lot or yr close friends.

SOME people can just "stop" an addiction.. I'm one of those and it sounds like you are also but it takes tremendous willpower that a lot of people just don't have.

Kernow, man, that's so awkward. I'm sitting here on my second beer of the afternoon (Harviestoun Bitter and Twisted, stat fans), knowing fine well the a third will be the last. I've wasted so many days chundering, or with a killer headache, that I know absolutely my limits, i.e., not much. I have a beer night on a friday, but never go past a certain amount. I know that I couldn't physically cope with a bladdering, so it's avoided.

A quick look at a betting agent, such as Ladbrokes, who made about £126 million profit in the first half of 2008 (on a bad year!) says the odds are always in their favour.
A glance at the Las Vegas strip on Google earth shows casinos shaped like New York, one with lions in it, one shaped like a castle, one shaped like a pyramid with the brightest natural light on earth on it and with bigger sphinxs than Egypt, one with an Eiffel Tower replica half the size of Paris', a Colosseum, fountains and so on.
Then ask yourself if the house always wins.
Part of the appeal of gambling is the sense that you're beating the odds and beating the establishment, but that so often isn't the case.
You've always seemed a sound chap when posting on here, so I really don't think you need any of these addictions.
Well done on making the first step - keep at it, mate.
