George st is great but very expensive, rose st is good.
If you are staying in the city centre you wont really find some rough areas, they are outside the city.
Check out up your street.com I think to give you an idea.

Well just got back, but I'll be up again the week after next! Discovered that one bed flats aren't much cheaper than London, yet two bed flat are almost the same price and miles cheaper than London. Oh joy

Least I did manage to find a retro gaming store, which made me happy.

That used to be owned/ran by a couple from my village in Scotland, don't know if it's still them that has it. Surprised it's still going if it is. Got my first playstation from there on Jap release for about £650-700.

If you're in Edinburgh, why not pop up to Cowdenbeath for a night out? You'll be guaranteed a warm welcome from the locals, and it's a gorgeous little village full of character.

So if anyone know any details about the city, good places to live and agencies to contact about flats (No one mention Gumtree). What's the night life like and where are the places to avoid in the city as I don't want to find my self in the ruffish area of town.

Any good retro and gaming stores as well?
As for looking for flats avoid grant management, those guys are a pain.
Avoid Broomhouse, Wester hailes, unless you know people from those areas. Other ****ty areas are muirhouse, THE CALDERS, sighthill, pilrig and probably niddrie. Unless you run around drunk and look like a victim, you won't get jumpped, but technically it can happen anywhere.
If you don't mind paying a bit more i suggest you to stay a couple of months near the city centre, not near high riggs, until you get to know the city.

Pubs, royal mile has some nice ones, southside, stockbridge, around lothian road. Other night activities, the bongo club, jazz bar, really depends what you want really.

Game master (leith) is pretty much the only independent shop here, neo-gen went busted years back. Cash convertor and exchange are the only other places to get some retro stuff, apart from gamestation, which charge you extra chain tax.

Things to do in edinburgh, get to the top of Arthur Seat, get a bike and cycle around the Pentlands. Get to the top of 7 hills. Run or cycle to Falkirk on the union canal. Go to the shore, either granton or portobello. Visit some of the museums, some of them are actually fun, if you're bit childish.

                                nope.

there were 2 shops in close proximity to each other, one had a blue canopy over the front of the shop. mega masters and and gamemasters i think thats what they were called, i searched down thier just last year and couldn't see either of them.
