There are a number of members on this forum in Japan, and a number of members who visit the country quite often, so it may be worth asking them (if they are willing to come forward that is ) As a tourists perspective is always different from locals. Just thought id point that out.

As Tomato kindly pointed out the Nihon Resource thread is a great place to start...

I have been asked to travel to Japan at the end of the year, but have not decided yet, so if and when I come to a decision, im sure I will be following in some of your footsteps...

Keep us posted on how you get on Staples!

You could PM me too. I've been living here for 11 years. Just don't ask me about Tokyo. I lived there 9 years ago so a lot has changed.

Why keep it to PM? A lot of people would probably benefit from the read.

Indeed, and that's why I haven't offered any input because my PM box is always filling up. It's a pain in the arse. If you want to ask any questions publicly though I can provide an Osaka/Kansai based perspective.

Tokyo is constantly under construction. New places, old places gone, new trian lines and so on. Akihabara as I knew it in the late 90's was a million times better than the crap it is now. Bloody DVD porn shops and stupid Maide cafes everywhere now. Gone are the many stores that have a floor dedicated to only one or two systems. Gone are the uncountible amount of street console demo units and gone is the basketball court behind Akihabara station. Yep, it's nothing like it used to be

Where I live I can get pretty much anything you can in Akihabara for less. The only problem is that you need a car to get around so it's not much good if you are here for a holiday.

Thanks for the replies guys. there is a reason why im asking why i feel more comfortable via PM.

Im a Muslim and my main concerns were about the food side meaning halal. I didn't want to let slip that im Muslim and thus have issues with people on here. or didnt want people to start like people do about look, we have accomodate them etc etc etc which ive had to endure many a times.

there you guys, ive said it.

I would be coming with the Mrs so i think the gaming side is not on the agenda. more a relaxing break away. more about walks, natural scenary, bit of shopping etc.

would love to visit tokyo but it would depend on cost of accomodation, travelling involved etc.

Don't want to cram everything in a 2 weeks, but rather savour our trip more and take it easy.

so anyone give any pointers accomodation wise/location wise/food wise etc.

I don't think anybody has a problem with you being a Muslim, Staples!

When I went to Japan, I ate all sorts of crazy foods and it's a shame you won't be able to do the same as sampling the cuisine of a country you visit is part of the holiday. See if you can speak to somebody who might know at your temple as it would be a shame to miss out.

If you can't eat anything there, here is a list of shops and restaurants that sell Halal food:

I think they try to keep it up to date, but I can't vouch for how accurate it is.

As I said, check what things you can try out there as it'd be a shame to avoid all local foods when you may well be OK to try them.

EDIT: Just read your edit. The parks are lovely, especially in bloom, but you can probably do that in the UK! I dragged my friend to all sorts of Gundam museums, themeparks, Akihabara, arcades, pachinko parlours, capsule hotels and ninja museums and she loved it! Though probably not as much as me...

As was said before, the main thread to read is here:

I'd spend some time reading that, growing a pair and telling your missus where you're going

Yep, no problem with you being Muslim at all.

A friend of mine from Nepal can't eat beef due to his religion but gets along just fine. We even go to McDonalds together. He normally gets chicken. Unfortunately I can't really help on the Halal food front apart from recommend the link given above by Quality Chimp.
