Well I think its about time that we did look to other countries (not just the US policeman) on how to solve our countries problems. Its obvious our laws & ideas dont seem to work anymore due to them being too lenient.

The Law needs to be changed on many levels, not just regarding ppl who rob/loot but also to those who are able to bypass law & walk away with payouts (bankers for instance).

I'm not saying that we should follow an exact replica of other countries systems, but to look at it & try & find something similar that is more relative to our way of living.
Allowing the European Union to make our decisions for us also isnt working

Cutting the benefits of offenders and also possibly evicting their families, who didn't actually commit the crime, can only lead to further chaos.

Also, people have pointed out plenty of poor people have Blackberry's, PS3s, 360s, the latest trainers- true, but I think that's a consolation prize almost. When you will never have the chance to gain meaningful or even well paid employent, a decent education, a more fulfilling life, you will turn your attention to the things that are within your grasp- whether conciously or unconciously.

I remember reading an interview with a highly respected photographer of musicians (rappers, ok), and he was gutted that kids with the most deprived lives feel they have to purchase ?100+ trainers. That was in the late 90s, but now I'm thinking, in a society that from top to bottom tells you that your are defined by your posessions, what hope do we have?

The rich and privelged always point to education and hard work, which I believe in, but don't ever tell me it's a level playing field or anywhere near it.

On a slightly lighter note, I thought this photo released yesterday was the funniset thing I've seen during these riots:

She goes looting & what does she grab? Just look at that look of complete ecstasy on her face.

"Nuffin in da world will eva compare 2 dis moment!"

        Typical bloody woman

Not just that, How can we talk about Poverty when these kids are well dressed have most of the mode con's (like a console, Internet, Mobile) Real harsh Poverty to me is when you can't afford to cloth your self, feed your self . Some of the Tattoo's, clothing and Mobile's these Youth were displaying, wearing I would have to think twice about buying and I work 40 hrs a week

Where I do feel sorry for the Kids of today Is that Drugs are a massive issues and are everywhere, what Jobs there are, is much difficult to get (due to sheer numbers of those trying for the same Job) and there's a lack of Heavy Industrial Jobs for those that leave school with little or no qualifications .

I don't buy the line that they were rioting because they are poor or Poverty was the cause, I'm sorry

Walk about some of the streets of Rhondda, Merthyr and you'll see a real forgotten class that no one careless about and where there is next to no meaningful employment. They weren't rioting and they've never had a level playing field in decades.

I like to know a country where everyone in it, is rich and well to do, and where anyone that wants a Job has one.

I know where youre coming from TA, but we dont know how many of these kids have all of those mod cons, but even if they dont have all of these things it still doesnt excuse them by them saying that they are poor. I agree that kids have more than they need & expect to have things at a click of a finger (due to many reasons) but the poverty excuse is just what it is - an excuse from them for their bad behaviour, in other words "its somebody elses fault, not mine".

And I know how it is living in a poor area too, so I'm with TA again on this. There is no industry down here anymore. We used to have a thriving dockland area at 1 time & factories. Now its the very rare office job or the odd cleaning job or shopwork, which everyone is applying for due to other places firing them off. I myself have experience of this as I'm looking myself.
If you want to see how it has effected parts of Wales then just check out Bridgends suicide rate. A lot of people really do have nothnig down here, however you dont see any of these ppl rioting or claiming that its due to their poverty

What makes you think she speaks like that? Your walking on dangerous ground if you think because she has looted she speaks in slang.

Some people might not believe this but I'll say it. I work in a shop and get to speak to a lot of people, I had my first riot talk today with a white OAP who lives in a nice rural village. At first I thought I he was going to go off on how the kids have no respect and they need teaching a hard lesson. To my suprise he asked 'I could afford anything in the centre I worked' and I said ' Not really'. He then said 'these kids were rioting because they have no hope, they see bankers and politicians take what they want so they want a piece of the pie. Lots of people are talking about the kids need respect but what they really need is hope. In my day we didn't have all these fancy labelled clothing and gadgets (my shop) shoved down our throats all the time, telling us we need this and we need that. We made do with anything we could find. Now your made to feel an outcast if you do not have the latest thing, you are looked down on if you don't have the new imachine player ()

He then laughed and said ' if I could riot I would because our bus services to town is being cut'. We talked about family and how I have 5 cousins (Dad has big family) and all of them grew up in tough areas. What kept them on the striaght and narrow was a strong family bond. He agree'd and gave a similar story and finished by saying 'Good to speak to you and make sure you keep your wits about you lad.

I felt happy I spoke to him but ashamed that I myself had pigeon holed him with an opinion before I heard him speak.

The debate continues, the truth often lies inbetween both sides of the argument.

SCORES of disappointed rioters queued up this morning to return goods they had mistakenly looted from Games Workshop.

Looters return stuff to Games Workshop

The crestfallen thieves had raided the store hoping for a PS3 or Nintendo bounty but arrived home to find they had stolen a box containing 300 unpainted Orcs and a board game called Beyond the Ultraforest of Kwang.

Martin Bishop, 19, said: "I am returning The Runering of Fangor.

"It includes two dice, each with about 40 sides and instructions on how to gain the trust of* a 'cloud wizard'.

It's not good in the valleys at all is it. I had to do 4 months volunteering (after being made redundant) in order to be thankfully taken on and get into the NHS . I really can't think of many kids that don't at least have a Mobile, a colour TV and console in their bedroom So I do not by this poverty lack of Jobs argument at all .
If that was the case , then parts of the North East, Scotland and Wales (who'll be getting Objective 1 funding till the end of time) would have all been rioting , not just now, but since the death of the Steel and Coal Industry in this country Ann Clwyd cares more about the kids and people in Iraq than in her own community; The valleys are truly a forgotten race and people as well as being some of the poorest around . I don't seem them rioting to give them some sort of credit

I agree with you. I don't think there's any excuse for what these people did, none at all

Hmm, it looks like 'gangs' are the new terrorists:

Gangs are being blamed for the explosion of riots and looting. But how do we know they were responsible?

Of course, "gang culture", is just a polite way of saying "young black males", despite the diversity of the rioters, but I suppose attempting to tackle the issue objectively and pragmatically is too much like hard work. It's much easier to just blame everything on one group.
