I got a new bike. Last new bike was 2010 (Trek Remedy) which I've been thrashing constantly since then. I'm still using it, but also now have a Specialized Levo Comp eBike. It's pretty fun. Still an effort, but going a lot further and legs aren't so smashed because the uphills are a lot shorter, so my running won't suffer.

Over the past six months I started hiring Lime and Forest e-bikes regularly. They've become pretty much my main way of getting around (although I'll ride them to a tube or overground station for longer journeys).

They're fun as hell to ride and they making getting everywhere a snap. I should have started years ago!

I got a Brommie on fleabay as a lockdown project to do up and ultimately use on my photo trips, I come down to London a few times a year on business and I should really bring it with me, London quite rightly is full of them.

Having said that I recently got my dream bike ; haven't had much of a chance to use it properly here, the weather has been ****e and I've been working a lot of weekends. But I'm taking it away in August to hit some flow and gravity Cannot wait

Until I bought my own bike, I used to regularly ride a Boris bike from Canary Wharf (work) to Hammersmith (closest parking rack to home) almost daily in the summer (then walk along the river path to home at East Sheen). London was such a great city to ride in compared to Sydney (ex weather factor). My commute was about 80% on a dedicated bike highway and people are far more considerate in London to bicycle riders.

I love Boris bikes but I gotta say, I hate the Lime bikes, here in Sydney dickheads just leave them everywhere with no consideration (ie in the middle of soccer fields, cricket pitches, random footpaths in the middle of nowhere, on the beach etc. Old man rant over

Santander bikes are a fine idea but there have never been near enough docks built for them to be any good for many areas. I'm only 15 minutes cycle from major stations like Waterloo and London Bridge and yet in an absolute dock desert, so they're effectively useless to me. The beauty of Lime and Forest bikes is that they're everywhere in Zone 2 so I can grab one from just outside my building. They've effectively democratised cycle hire for inner London areas which don't get the same level of investment from TfL.

That's really interesting to learn. Having only started cycling recently I've been pleasantly surprised by how fulsome the infrastructure is, which I hadn't noticed before. There are quite a few roads where they just paint a bicycle symbol on the road and call it good, which makes me laugh, but also plenty of fully separated cycle lanes with their own curbs, special traffic light systems for cyclists, etc.

It's a common complaint but my rebuttal every time is that there's something else that takes up far more room, on every road. In fact they're lining every street and usually take up about 80% of available space! Electric bikes are rather small fry by comparison...

Lovely, I used to lust after a Canyon when I was younger. I've only seen a couple in the wild but even the black paint jobs look to be of a much higher quality than a lot of other bikes, certainly nicer than my all black Cube.

wakka I know there are a lot of positives for the Limes, they would be a God send for those outside the boris bike network who don't own a bike but would like to use one for personal transport. Unfortunately here in Sydney the vast majority of users are inconsiderate tits.

In London whether you need to park Limes and Forests (the rival brand here, the exact same thing basically just slightly cheaper) in bays is done borough by borough. Here in Southwark you can ditch them anywhere which honestly I do prefer because it's a lot more convenient and you can just go door to door. You do get some lobbed sideways onto the pavement in bizarre ways, mostly by kids, but for the most part I think as an issue it's overblown and outweighed by how beneficial they are. It does make sense in busier central areas though that they control where they are left more. They should probably just institute the same thing in Sydney, it's basically a legislative and then simply software adjustment.
