If the chain is old it could be stretched, which would cause it to skip teeth. If its jumping between gears, you might need to adjust the cable tension on the mech it self.

It's a new bike, I've had since middle of may.

I've adjusted the cable tension a couple turns each time going up and down the gears much improved so far.

bought today a copy of mountain bike uk magazine and got a free beanie hat with it .

Multi tools, what are you guys using ?

I've been putting a Allen key set and small screwdrivers in my saddle bag taking up room in case.

Looking at these compact multi tools, I've seen a crank brothers 19 tool with even a chain breaker for not much money.

Would these chain breakers be any good to remove the pins in shimano chains ?

I carry a stand alone chain breaker (and spare links). I also carry a Gerber multi tool because it has pliers and wirecutters and screwdivers. I also carry a spare gear cable, although now that I have Gore RideOn, I'm wondering if it will even fit through. I also carry an excellent allen key set that fold out of a handle which gives amazing leverage and long reach.

I'm sure the chain breaker in the crank bros tool will do the job.

I only tend to carry tyre levers, but I don't do a lot of off road and when I do I'm close to civilisation!

Interesting, I will look into the gerber tool, i also wonder if my gear problem is down to mud getting on the cable ?

I was out yesterday and went down a muddy trail and it was really thick mud, I couldn't see the writing on the tyre and very slippy.

Charlesr, are the gore rideon sealed cables completely covered by the outer casing from shifter to deraileur ?

I always wonder why they leave the cable showing down the rear part of a mountain bike and at the front.

The RideOn cables have a normal looking outer sheath and a tiny inner sheath. The inner sheath continues all the way.

The reason normal cables show along the top tube is to save weight. Long piece of metal = heavy.

I thought it was weight saving but I didn't think the outer sheath on gear cables would weigh that much.

It looks like I will have to buy the kit and fit myself as local bike place doesn't stock them and re index my gears.

I've just replace my front Shimano M575 disc and pads with Superstar Components alternatives. I cautiously bedded them in from speed a few times and then tried to stop with one finger. OMG front wheel slide.

Awesome stopping power now. Wish I had done this 2 years ago.

I got the sintered pads which are supposed to be noisy but with good bite (confirmed!) and long lasting in bad weather (I live in the UK!). The organic and kevlar ones are quieter and are meant to brake even harder but don't last as long, although I know people that use the organic ones and are happy.

I got the Vibe disc for heat reasons rather than looks (the Wave looks better).

I used superstar for some 3rd party replacement tekro pads (yeah I know), but they were much cheaper and seem to do the job fine.

if I ever need to replace the discs i will have to buy a new wheel the discs are riveted to the hubs on my bike.

It sounds a bit like my discs, I'm assuming there's a sort of quick release mech on the hub.

I presume it's just a cost issue, I only paid 600 for the bike, if I had spent over 1k then it would be all adjustable.

I will in a few years upgrade, change wheels anyway.

first thing on list is gore rideon cables, I must get these.
