Thought this might have legs, as we all like to show off weird crap we've bought. I'll get the ball rolling with what turned up today:


Can you tell what it is yet?



That's right, it's a complete set of the Japanese edition Harry Potter books. There must be some geek points in there for me.



There was also a set of Death Note manga in there I was less happy about carrying it back from the sorting office though; it weighed A LOT.

I tend to struggle with actual Japanese novels, but I know Harry Potter back to front, so it's easy to figure out the words/grammar I can't follow just by remembering the original. Plus, they're children's books, so it has furigana (phonetic readings next to kanji). The Japanese version is a very good translation, actually. There's a really interesting website that compares translations for the Vietnamese, Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and Japanese versions. As you'd expect, the Mainland Chinese version is hilariously horrendous.
