Undoubtedly he was a proper nutter and I'm sure he did get up to lots of mental things, but quite a lot of this stuff seems to be speculation (after all, nobody really knows much about North Korea do they since it's so closed-down).
For example, in one of the Indie links above there's this:
"A Russian envoy, Konstantin Pulikovsky, travelled with Kim, who has a phobia about flying, on the famous train in 2001 on a trip to Moscow and said roast donkey was flown fresh to the train every day and the leader ate with silver chopsticks. He said they drank champagne with a bevy of young women of the "utmost beauty and intelligence".
which appears more or less word-for-word in an article on the BBC, but there it's live lobsters air-lifted in daily, not roast donkey. Smells fishy to me. Or is that just the lobster/roast donkey?

Many buildings don't even have rooms.

True fact: I heard that Kim Jong Il was actually J Edgar Hoover in DISGUISE!

With his various eccentricities it's easy to get carried away with the pop culture image that has developed around Jong-Il which can make it easy to overlook or forget that despite his power and character his life was also at times deeply steeped in unhappy times, he was after all so very ronery.
