    Heroes of 2011

This is taken wholesale from MSN's poll which looks to see who people think is the Hero/Heroes of 2011. Due to the poll limits here (and to cut the novelty additions, though some worryingly still remain) the above are the 10 leading options from the MSN poll. It'll be interesting to see how the more discerning Bordersdown masses vote.

Who was your Hero/Heroes of 2011?

I voted for the Fukushima Workers (and see that the other three votes so far have also gone to them). Potentially sacrificing your own life for the safety of others? That's probably the best definition of heroism there is. Although being the sister of someone famous does run it close...

Voted before reading comments and we've all gone for those brave Japanese workers so far.

Yeah, I voted before reading comments and I went for Fenton. Especially when he was in Jurassic Park.

Got to be Mohamed Bouazizi. He has led to an uprising which has changed the world. Whether the long term outcome is what the protestors and Western sympathizers want remains to be seen.

The royal family and David Cameron don't even belong on the same list.

I went for Fukushima for obvious reasons and Tom Watson because it is about time the press stopped reporting in the way they do. A story should not be chased, forced etc to sell a paper. We simply need facts that are important to us. If I want drama/fiction etc, I will watch TV or read a book.

I assume the inclusion of the royals in there is some sort of joke. " Pippa Middleton : Being Kate Middletons Sister" Oooh, somebody get the gold statue

In terms of ballsiness it probably has to be the Osama Bin Laden surprise killing mission.

Didn't read it was multiple votes. Would have gone for :-

                  * Fukushima Workers : Risking radiation poisoning to fix reactors after March Japan Earthquake
                  * Wooton Bassett people

Hopefully in the near future we will look back at 2011 as one of the most important years ever. RE: speed of light & God Particle.

The year they searched for but didn't quite find the God Particle?

I write that now wondering if they found it over Christmas? I haven't read the news in a few days.

They've found... something. But science being what it is (ie, you don't say you have something till you've repeated the observations a few times, had it independently repeated somewhere else, and written and argued about lots of things in scientific journals) no-one is going to 'confirm' a find for years yet.

The sad thing is, every one of the above options is from the MSN poll, so sadly David Cameron and the Royal Family aren't joke ones

Should also be pointed out that Tom Watson MP is also a major supporter of the games industry at Westminster.

                              I don't know what a hero is.

Dictionaries say it is a person of courageous and noble qualities. But what does it mean to be noble? What does it mean to be courageous? Reading Plato's Socratic Dialogues where Socrates asks those very same questions, you realise most people attach a false sense of meaning to those words, and that the thinking behind attaching those labels (like heroic or good or brave) usually comes undone under close logical inspection.
