Agree with this. I visited some 8 years ago for five days and I was surprised how expensive everything is, especially the food when you have restaurants eveywhere. The good thing is you have an excellent choice on what to eat, but everything drains your monetary resources rather quickly.
I was surprised how European Singapore felt, I was expecting something more in-between west and east.

I was recommended Clarke Quay when I asked where to go out for a drink and was shocked that pints were £20+ in every bar! And that was in 2011!

That was a short night out

        No need to disagree, chaps.
The chances of me going to Singapore or Bangkok any time soon are preeeeetty slim.

        Wise man say:

Man who walks through airport turnstile sideways, always going to Bangkok.

No more trips away for me this year, but sometime in the first half of next year I really want to get away for kind of an extended trip somewhere, like maybe a month, and do some work remotely.

I always love visiting Southeast Asia and it's a massive place (obviously lol) with loads of bits I've not seen. But I've also never been to South America whatsoever so I'm also kind of considering if I should do that instead, maybe starting with Colombia. Feel like that will end up being quite a bit pricier, though. You can keep it cheap in SE Asia.
I went to Brazil a good few years back and it was great. Can be v. expensive in places, and then dirt cheap in others. The contrast between super rich and piss poor was a real eye-opener. Hadn't really experienced that IRL before. Standing underneath Christ the Redeemer as a heavy electrical storm rolled in is a great memory. Everyone's hair standing on end in a weirdly quiet atmosphere, followed by trying to get down the mountain in darkness in torrential rain with thunder and lightning, and screaming monkeys in the forest. Was a bit of a mad one.

            Agreed.

I always get my back up when someone says something to the effect of, never go there, it's a **** city or place. Or I used to live there, it's a **** hole. Those people are normally the most least travelled, or snobby over anything that isn't quite to their tastes. I remember saying on here that I had visited Heart of Gaming Arcade last year and was planning a trip to Arcade Club in Bury, and they spoke so much **** because of the area, and warned me about the safety. I went there with my Brother for 3 nights and had the time of my life; Great Bars, good restaurants and the best Arcade I've ever visited. You have to ignore ***** like that, any advice from anyone which is to the effect of It's a **** hole as they clutch their pearls is worth ignoring.

I've had amazing experiences in supposedly bad areas and poor experiences in supposedly great areas. Each country or city has them, and sometimes that intel is completely horse ****.

The older I've got, the more happy I've become doing the minimal amount of research while traveling and just going somewhere which takes my fancy. Ignore the *****, just travel and have fun.

South America in general is really expensive to travel, surprisingly so, Columbia i remember cost a lot in general every day, people i met that travelled Chilli were pretty shocked at their daily budgets.

Brazil was a real mix, but we had local knowledge, so knew where to go and where to avoid. Had a wild night in a giant hall (I'd hesitate to call it a night club) in a favela, packed to the rafters with people competing to get a place in the parade for the Rio carnival. Absolute mayhem. Had the best sushi I've ever had in Rio too. Apart from that, I've no idea about the cost of travelling in SA, though I'd imagine Venezuela is one to miss, in view of its monetary woes.

Yes, I visited in 1996 and it didn't feel 'Asian' to me, there was even a Mark's and Spencer's there.

I only visited for a day as I was on holiday in Malaysia, The KL-Singapore air bridge was quite popular as you had the opportunity of flying on stuff you normally wouldn't be able to due to some airlines for example flying a long haul into KL and then the small hop onto Singapore.
I took advantage of flying Singapore Airlines first class for exactly the same price as an economy ticket on the Manchester-Heathrow shuttle.
