Happy birthday
Last night someone started a fire at the restaurant over the street from the hotel. Completely obscured from view by trees and pillars, if one of the cleaners hadn't gone to go for a smoke, the whole place might have gone up. I call 911 and 6 fire trucks show up. So the cops once again have my number. Sigh.

FSW, this is slightly related to one of my current irks/thoughts. You are too aware of the system - not your fault, it means the system isn't right yet. I am looking forward to a day when computers are removed from the computing process and that means both software and hardware. Computers are an integral part of all our lives now and yet they so often seem to get in the way. For me, the way things need to go is to take them out of the way. To make us completely unaware of them.
For example, I was copying a load of stuff from one hard drive to another. Left it going and came back to find the computer had restarted at some point for some reason and it stopped my transfer. Really, the computer shouldn't have had to be involved in any visible way and all it did was bugger things up. All I was actually doing was moving stuff from point A to point B. I should never have had to have been aware of the computer, never mind have the action scuppered by it.
Or while I'm working, if I see a poxy java update alert, that is the computer getting in the way. Or a Windows update thing.
Computers right now are like having some annoying person interrupting whenever we're trying to get stuff done.
Things are much better in some ways (the commands on old computers just to do basic tasks were like another language) but now we're dealing with endless updates. For example, who was really all that aware of the Megadrive when we were playing it? We were in the game, not reminded of the system. Now, it's endless updates and alerts when anything happens at all. The systems are getting in the way.
And that comes down to something as basic as having to be aware of where the buttons are, like in your example.
I think the future of computing is in making us completely unaware of the actual computer. It should never get in the way. It should never be an interruption or the source of problems. It should be invisible. Apple's iOS was on to a good thing with this and it was a big step in the right direction, although it has grown more complex. Microsoft's Outlook, by comparison, is a massive step in the whole other direction.
