I really want to do it! And I am getting closer gradually. It's not like I have stagnated...yet. Been doing regular speed, threshold, and distance training. Trouble is I'm also training for a 10k in four weeks and a half in 6! Quite tricky to focus too much on speed right now.

The training for the half should increase your aerobic capacity making it easier to do the shorter distances too. One goal a time and the rest will follow naturally. The only really hard bit with all of this is patience. Like my 3 months of boring slow runs. They have paid off massively. Parkrun is great because it's a free weekly run, but it fools you into thinking you can measure progress on a weekly basis. Real change takes much longer.

Aye, training for one distance usually benefits others. I concentrated on hitting sub-19 for 5k over the summer and I found my 10k and half marathon times also tumbled. Of course, specific workouts focused on those distances is also important, but 5k training helps to stress test your VO2Max ability, which is what a lot of these race calculators are based on.
I remember my chase for sub-20 where I would get ever closer at Parkrun each week. 20:03. 20:02. 20:07. Even 20:00 on the nose! Then several weeks later, it all came good on one day when conditions were right and everybody around me was chasing for sub-20 - I blew it apart with a 19:53!
You'll get there, I'm sure and then you'll be well on the way to chasing after a new PB.
I'm just about to set off on my final milestone PB chase for 2014 at the Cardiff Half. Time to make sub-90 happen!

Thanks M0by!
I felt very good for majority of the race. Legs constantly wanted to go faster in the first couple of miles due to a good taper, and there was a slight lull during middle mile syndrome, but managed to bring it all together for a 21 minute final 5k. Looking inside me, I could have gone a touch faster yesterday and I think I was slightly too conservative with the pacing - they always say when you've had a good race, you can always go faster. My full race write-up can be found here.

Ran the Great Birmingham Run for the 5th time yesterday, but rather than race it, I was helping the BBC to film the Inside Out presenter's first half marathon: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04lx11q/insi...
Skip to the last 10 minutes or so for my handy work!

I've been invited to a Strava focus group (free stuff!!). I haven't been given the specifics yet but as far as I'm aware it will be regarding what features are more likely to encourage users to upgrade to the premium version for ?30/year - seeing as that's the survey I filled in, prior to them asking me to attend. If you have any thoughts Charles, could you drop me a PM or post here. That goes for anything else you'd like raised about the site/service.
Taka, you should definitely check out Strava it's a better featured site than Garmin Connect I find - Segments work for a start! I still upload my watch times to Garmin like you do but as I have a Strava account they are automatically siphoned across to that too.Last edited by Mr M0by; 24-10-2014, 11:07.

I'm doing the 30 day Strava free trial, but I've cancelled already - most of the features seem to be either for a) cyclists with power meters in the cranks or b) runners with bluetooth heart rate monitors that talk to the phone. I have neither. (and my phone doesn't support the bluetooth specification required by Strava, so there's no point in my buying a relevant sender unit)Last edited by charlesr; 24-10-2014, 12:40.
