I used to drink every night of the week, and did so for most of my twenties and early thirties. I was never an alcoholic, it was just where me and my friends socialised. I loved, and still do, the pub banter with mates and meeting new people etc. When I left london for a while to live in Norway, I rarely drank as it wasn't such a big thing for everyone to go to the pub, and never missed or craved it. When I came back to London I started drinking more regularly again, more from the social aspect than anything. These days I maybe drink one night a week, or maybe two some weeks. I agree that heavy drinking in a percentage of people can cause issues, but it's nonsense to say it makes everyone an alcoholic if they do.

Your lack of understanding is a bit disconcerting.
You also called Adam an alcoholic just becuase he said he drinks a lot. While his lifestyle doesn't sound heathy you shouldn't be saying that he is an addict becuase you don't know it's true that he is a alcoholic.
He could stop right now and never drink again without problems if he wanted too for all you know. Just becuase someone drinks a lot does not make them a addict. An addict usually thinks about drink from the moment they wake up, this is the first sign that Adam probably isn't an addict at all, because he said he only drinks in the evenings. He clearly doesn't need the alcohol to get himself through the day.
its also worth pointing out that Adam have just worded his statement wrong, he may not actually drink every night and may have simply meant he can easily get through that many cans when he does.

Whilst I wouldn't do it, as long as it doesn't affect your health/work/relationships then fine.
My Grandmother smoked 40 a day all her life and died after a short illness at 87. She may have lived longer but she was happy doing what she wanted. I've never smoked myself but can see that the enjoyment is sometimes more important than the negative health aspects.

moving aside from that... I go out to the pub near enough every night and that usually ends up us continuing the night at a house (mine mostly!) or other nightly activities... But I don't drink. It's a bit pointless really, you don't need to drink to socialize - and all the people I'm with all drink too...
But as someone said before, I did definitely substitute it for crappy foods (4 McD's a day is not good...) Now however I go go the gym everyday and manage my food correctly (though do like a nice curry or pizza every now and again). I've also lost 24Kg and feel absolutely amazing for it.
Not entirely sure why I posted that really, but feels damn good to say!!
