I spent New Year's Day with my wife's extended family. All of her aunts, uncles, cousins etc. attended a large family gathering at he grandmother's house. It was a proper traditional o-sechi-ryouri meal, loads of food and talking. Everybody knew I would be attending and I was quite nervous. I didn't want to mess up or do something wrong.

It went better than could have been expected really. People were impressed enough at a foreigner who could speak Japanese, use chopsticks, eat squid and sushi etc. I got on really well with her uncle over a couple of beers too, and the crying kids helped deflect the attention. Ultimately a good effort, and I felt like one of the family.
