They still do, so white day makes no difference there.

It makes life a lot easier for us guys over here (we get an early indication of how much money/effort is expected), so I'm not complaining, but it is clearly a product of Meiji or some other big chocolate companies marketing machine. Just like the setsubun sushi roll tradition.

Well I got curious and had to look it up. And yes, Darwock's suspicion seems to be correct - turns out it was invented by the National Confectionery Industry Association. So it's not just a day hijacked as a cynical marketing exercise, it started out life as one. Seems to have started as Marshmallow Day in 1977, with companies pushing white chocolate the year after.

I'm definitely cynical about the whole exercise to be honest, but not cynical enough that I want a disgruntled wife!

It can be confusing because you have to judge what type of chocolate to give to different people. I made the mistake of giving my wife (then girlfriend) some rather expensive store-bought chocolates last year and she seemed rather unimpressed (despite trying to fake it). I now know that I'm supposed to make them myself, however crappy they are!

You could have told her you hated how people have lost the true spirit of white day and wanted to take the holiday back to its commercial roots.

                Anyone brave enough for this??

Incredibly the chocolate actually contains cocoa mass. I put peanut butter in curries. I'm pretty sure chocolate would be ok.

Lotteria, fast food chain here in Japan, has been doing ltd edition chocolate and mustard burgers. I think they've finished already and I missed out. I did get to try the chips with chocolate sauce. It's really cool - they give you a jam tart-style case thing to put the sauce in and when you've finished with the chips you just eat the tart

Some weird combinations, I do like the chocolate and chilli bars you get and even the Lindt chocolate and sea salt bar but chocolate with hot food, not so sure on that.

We had chocolate with cheese and onion crisps in it for a while here. Tasted like the back seat of a school bus.

Sure I saw that reviewed over on www.foodstufffinds.co.uk last year now you mention it.

                          Like your summary though

All this talk of White Day and I see this banner on one of my work sites for White Pudding & Black Pudding, not sure what's in it, or if I even want to know.

Eh? Are you saying you don't know what black pudding is?

White pudding I'd forgive as I think that's Scotland (and apparently Ireland) but we know it as mealie pudding where I'm from, but anyhow... its basically black pudding without the blood,
