Charles should only allow name changes on the strict condition that the avatar never changes. We need some consistency for recognition. I see you all as your avatars anyway. Expecting a mangy bird if I ever meet Loftsqwelch.

Drat, and I was finally thinking of changing my avatar here to something else

A scarily accurate description of me...

Power out for several blocks of downtown until Thursday. Some staff member in Safeway tells me not to turn on my appliances until after power is back...but the Calgary City information sites say NOTHING about that. People, gah.

A week ago today I was on a beach in Koh Tao. Now I'm replying to emails while grimey London rain splatters the office windows.

                    Ah well.

Yes, greyer than a battleship out the windows here in Essex, no rain. Yet.

Usually it's a precaution so that you don't end up damaging anything plugged in as sometimes the power can spike as it's turned back on, over here the plugs have fuses so they are protected. Other reason is if everyones appliances are still turned on when the power comes back on everything will instantly start drawing a ton of power which puts a massive strain on the system in the worst case if the load is high enough it could cause the system to go down.

Although most cities have enough capacity to cope with the strain.

I've bought six surge protector extension leads in the last ten days after an electrician told me a power spike three weeks about of over 2000 Volts plus did my sons TV in (it has a 8x 240 limiter built in to the TV and blew that!). Luckily it was only a cheap fix for the TV and computer plugged in to that socket in the house and no other sockets were affected.
Can't suggest people buy them enough as they're so cheap now.

Only have surge protection on my desktop. Never have power issues in this house mind, aside from shorts on occasion due to my Mum's haphazard gardening skills. She used to go through the Ethernet cable to my room each time she trimmed the hedges, had to resolder it each time.

My PC and TV setup are both on non-surge protected extensions but I turn them off when I'm out of the house (which is about 10-18 hours of the day some days). I'll look into surge protection on the way home from school.
The power company has told us there will be no surge though...if I believe them.

What really irks me today is guests at the hotel complaining about not having cable TV. One guy walks up to me and asks me about it and when I start to explain about the fire and how the electricity company is trying to restore power to the apartment buildings affected he just walked away. I was tempted to throw something heavy at him.
