    Record Player/Turntable

So over the years I've picked up a few Vinyls just for the sake of the lovely large covers and recently I discovered picture discs too. I figured these are going to waste and I'd love to listen to them and I see Crosley Cruisers everywhere so picked one up at Argos yesterday.

My first attempt the turntable didn't spin and after giving it a little nudge it set about its business. Set at 45 I put on a 7" Years & Years single and Olly sounded much deeper than usual and switching it to 78 was too fast and 33 1/3 is obviously too slow. I gave a 12" Utada EP a go and same results, too slow on 33 1/3 and naturally too fast on the other two settings. Then it just started screeching and wouldn't stop, turned out it wasn't from the speaker but from the platter itself.

I returned it and got a Bush Classic and pretty much the same issues apart from the screeching. First attempt, I put on the 45 adaptor, lay down my Years & Years single, platters spinning but the vinyl isn't, took off the adaptor and it was perfect for about 20 seconds then it randomly stopped. Second attempt and its playing too fast again, 45 is too fast 33 1/3 is even faster (wtf?) and 78 is obviously way too fast. Tried with a 12" and again all settings are way too fast.

I now just feel like a bit of an idiot. I don't know if these cheap players are just rubbish and worn out from being stocked for so long or if I'm completely clueless as to what I'm doing. I've just ordered an Audio-Technica AT-LP60USB, reviews generally seem good but then so were Crosley ones but I think I'd trust Audio-Technica a bit more. I'm now willing to splurge a bit more if these cheap ones are truly the issue. So any recomendations? I was hoping to go with Argos but their selection is small hence ordering the last viable option the LP60 which I hope works. Or am I just doing something wrong? Frankly its all pretty new to me so any advice would be helpful.

Get the cheapest project you can find. The ones you've been using so far are absolute garbage that will actually damage your vinyl.

A Project elemental is 159 nut has no lid. I'd go for the Project essential at 200. Richer sounds have them.

Yeah, basically you bought complete **** which is why those record players didn't work. Spend a little more if you want a half decent turn table. Actually, AudioTechnia do some good cheap tables. No background noise, no distortion, aluminum platter (the place the record sits on), sold belt drive, quality rubber mat and not to expensive.

General humans are keen to get rid of their bulky Hi-fi gear so keep an eye out on Gumtree etc, recently picked up a Dual 505 Turntable, Harman Kardon HK1200 amp 7 an Aiwa CD player for ?35 collected a few weeks back, bargains are their to be had.

If you;re suspicious of second hand kit, really cant go wrong with a project, a friend recently got a carbon and its a beaut.

I just ordered a Pioneer PL-30-K earlier today for a shade under ?250 - a little more than I originally intended to spend, but it has really good reviews. From what I've heard, the Audio-Technica AT-LP60USB is a also a very good entry level turntable, but I just preferred the design of the Pioneer.

Thanks guys, glad to know it wasn't me.

I'm gonna give the Audio Technica a try for now and I'll keep an eye on gumtree and such for an upgrade down the line.

Second hand is a good option, you can pick up something like a Rega Planar 2 for about ?100-?150. Don't forget to get a decent pre amp as well if your amp doesn't have a phono in.

Even if the amp does have a phono in it may still be worth getting a pre-amp. I use this Audio-Technica pre-amp https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/aw/d/B00...sAL&ref=plSrch

They are worth picking up if you want to get the best out of your turntable. I use a Project Phono Box S http://www.project-audio.com/main.php?prod=phonoboxs
