I have never heard of government being in contempt of parliament. Has this happened before? It can't happen often, right?

It could have been completely avoided too by conceding before the vote. Instead they chose to have a verdict of contempt recorded against them in the history books for evermore.

The government wasn't just defeated on the contempt motion, it also failed to stop an amendment by Dominic Grieve to give MPs a meaningful vote should when May's Brexit proposal fails in the commons: https://www.theguardian.com/politics...may-loses-vote
I'm sure Mrs May will be able to live off the profits of her husband's investment in medical cannabis once outed though (look up GW Pharmaceuticals, though it is a bit tenuous, I like the hypocrisy).
