The European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs just voted 'yes' on highly controversial parts of the EU's new Copyright Reform, but there's still a chance to reverse the EU's stance.
The EU MP's have voted in favour of the content censorship that would wipe out internet meme's and more. Gotta love that they have so much time to waste.
They should know that

So, that vote MP's pushed for on the final deal? The deal may not be ready in time for it which would push it back two months and cement the fact that the vote could literally be one between the worst deal ever or no deal rendering the entire escapade useless.
For Merkel though, it seems like after international complaints, the rise of multiple alt-right parties, huge issues in her home country and Brexit she may have realised that she miiiight have fluffed up. She now finds herself in a situation where she describes the survival of the EU as resting on solving immigration issues and other nations trying to impose tight solution deadlines on her. Somewhat amusing as the only option really is to bring in tighter rules which would have avoided all this in the first place.

Given the already ballooning and disgustingly high costs of fuel its speaks volumes about the lack of planning for Brexit Britain that they'd consider anything that could negatively affect infrastructure during the coming years. Booze, fair enough it's still on the cheap side so makes some sense but fuel is begging for trouble.

It's only a matter of time before something similar goes through. It goes beyond an EU thread but I think we're going to see pushes from many sides for many reasons that will all amount to a more controlled, restricted internet. Large powerful media companies looking to control content and copyright, internet providers looking to further erode net neutrality, politicians looking to make a name for themselves like some sort of internet sheriff (likely using welfare of kids as the platform to introduce draconian measures). The Googles and Facebooks will fight it and, if they win and things continue, will end up controlling the internet themselves. So like Aliens versus Predator, I think in the end whoever wins, we lose.
And yet I also think some of it probably has to happen, as it already has in some ways. It still strikes me as unfair how much YouTube became massive through what amounted to giant scale and willing enabling of copyright infringement and yet Napster got hit hard and that Dotcom guy went to jail.

Meanwhile, pirate sites wouldn't care anyway.Last edited by MartyG; 06-07-2018, 11:00.

Well I'd say it's less born from politicians and more from certain media companies telling them what they want. It's a 'follow the money' situation, on all sides really. And I think it's likely only going to get worse. What could have been some common sense checks or categorisation or copyright usage reframing will eventually get sold as something along the lines of "kids can get access to pictures of bums" until there is much more of a lockdown. Personally I think the internet is a much more free place right now than it will be in a couple of decades.
