I don't think it's necessarily the role of children's programmes to respond to every cynical twist of contemporary politics. Maybe it's not a terrible thing that kids can be entertained for a while by the idea that not all policemen, politicians or firemen are venal and incompetent. Would children gain anything by seeing Station Officer Steele in the dock for failing to evacuate a tower fire? A positive role model is not a bad thing, even if it doesn't always match with reality. When you've got something like the blatant classism and racism of Enid Blyton or the outrageous stereotyping of my old Rupert the Bear annuals, however, that's a different story.
