Back in secondary school, there were a few times where ex-pupils (who'd been gone maybe a year or two) came in to see teachers or what-not and I thought they were the saddest people on the planet - coming back to a school you don't have anything to do with any more, for no good reason. You also tended to get weirdo sad sack dropout types who left school the year or two before but would wait outside school every day for their mates from previous years to turn up (rather than getting a job or something).
The main thing I remember about primary/secondary school is the unrelenting boredom - watching the clock go round and waiting, counting ceiling tiles, flicking my pencil around in a circle on the desk, staring at clouds, imagining playing computer games in my head, just trying my best to daydream about anything. I remember some fun times of school and briefly want to go back to those days, but then remember that these were largely just tiny moments of excitement in an otherwise dull day.
I wouldn't mind going back to the school holidays for a bit though - going down to No Frills supermarket with 50p for a Swiss roll and a bag of salted popcorn, VHS copy of The Running Man off the market, good session on Rampart on the Master System, microwave corn dog in the freezer. If nothing else I wish I could be as easily amused as I was then.

Irks me seeing oodles of them little metal NOS bottles on the walk up to my mate's. EVERY time.
I just think "what a waste of good metal". Serious, them capsules are quality and amazing. And I mean as actual, sturdy metal capsules. But they're absolutely wasted for a few sniffs and dump em out ya car mate.
So much solid stuff for so actual little. And I have seen thousands the last few years. Usually in clusters of six or more, usually about ten.
I have heard these things aren't recyclable. If that is the case then think of how much good metal goes to waste in this particular pursuit!!!

This "school's the best days of yer life" thing - I've been told that a few times and even imparted it once to my mates little brother, who seemed to look up to me a bit. I always took it to mean (and how I explained it when I used it), that you have no bills to pay, no children or girlfriend/wife relying on you, few big decisions to make. Just learning and fun (if not in school, but out of school with your mates or your games, etc). So much time to kill.
Never much thought about the bullies and cool kids, missing the fear/adulation aspect.
Personally, I got through school ok, but in retrospect I hated it. I was a big lunk, so got bullied and humiliated a lot by older, bigger kids (my big gob didn't help) and shamefully, bullied someone (in an isolated incident), myself. The whole time was pretty miserable but I did have a C64 and was into some great music, so had a lot of time in the presence of both of those things, which made the period bearable.Last edited by gunrock; 17-06-2020, 07:54.

I loved school!!
I hated school when I was there a Culmination of bullying & just not having a very clever brain meant I couldn't wait for the school day to end but as soon as I left & entered the real world I realise I hate this much, much more & school was a breeze by comparison & even with all the **** I endured, I had friends (something I no longer have), a Social life, no real cares, the golden age of video games/movies/music, everything was just better & I'd love to have it all again
School WAS the best time of my life...I just never realised it & squandered it

I actually had the pleasure of confronting one of my bullies about 5 years back. This guy and his mates, 3 years older than me. Every dam week it was a case of trying to take me down, they were such a joke that 4 of them couldn’t take me, every week they’d go away worse than me and the next week it would be a new corner or scheme to trying and finally give me a good hiding.
Anyway the leader of this band of jokes came into my factory to buy some products, still a 6ft3 lump but made of marshmallows when it comes down to it.
He starts talking like we were actually friends the cheeky sod, so I explained that you were a vicious, nasty bully who got what was coming to him every time you tried to attack me, id entirely forgotten you or you joke cretin followers even existed up until this point, grinned at him and he left.
On their last day of school they actually brought in weapons and jumped me after i left, iron bars etc. I grabbed a loose brick off someone’s garden wall and went straight after mr marshmallow and knocked him out, he still had the scar above his eye as a reminder, which was nice to see.
Every dammed day was a war and i hated it.

School days most definitely weren't the best days of my life. Very little in the way of fond memories. Things got much better once I left and started work and moved and met the kind of true friends I still feel very lucky to have. Maybe that's the best way ... better than having your life get progressively worse from your mid-teens.

Junior school was ok.
Secondary school was terrible.
Sixth form was great.
University was great.
I only really learned to stand on my own two feet at sixth form. I learnt that I had the cuss to fight back, whereas before I’d take the jibes in silence and soak them up like a sponge.
Sixth form to the end of my MA was 1995 to 2001 which was a great era for games, tv and music.
I remember getting into all the Britpop, altrock and grunge stuff. It was fresh and exciting, and an actual musical era (which we haven’t had for 20 years). Perhaps the last era with a trademark set of genres. There were some great films released around the time. The PS1 came out and changed everything. The internet was in its infancy. Magazines were still a big thing. We had the tail end of TNG on the tele. DS9. Voyager. The X Files. UFO magazine was still going. Sunderland were the best they’ve been in my lifetime. I’d spend hours listening to Ash, Pumpkins etc, playing MGS, reading Starburst magazine, collecting a mag called The X Factor. My mates were a good bunch. There were no yobbos at Sixth Form. Every morning I had brekkie reading Digi and Planet Sound.
It was a great era.
