We don't make anything. Hence the need for the coffee shops to be trading with city workers otherwise the economy will totally collapse!

We still manufacture quite a wide range of products, but the economy is mostly services based now. It's about a 85:15 split.
Bear in mind that things like TV production and videogames and the sales of those (which accounts for a fair chunk of exports) counts towards services - which kind of dance the line between the two.Last edited by MartyG; 07-09-2020, 11:42.

Pret will die, but Boris and friends will be fine.
I should add, that the pound will drop sharply so they'll want to convert the pounds into to euros and get it in to Monaco quickly to avoid tax. Also if they can filter it through a charity on the way, even better.Last edited by Cassius_Smoke; 07-09-2020, 16:35.

So, something I don't get:

So firstly, to get this out of the way, I'm thankful that COVID deaths in the UK have not been as high as they could've been.
But that aside, if the cases have been going up since July, why are the deaths and hospital patients still trending down? Is that just because we're more aware of the disease, so fewer cases are progressing to a dangerous level?

Also many care homes were annihilated early on and those people can’t die twice.

Yep, the Government rigged the statistics in their favour on deaths weeks ago. It's a completely unreliable number now and where infections in younger people rise deaths in older people are sure to follow. That and there's a natural lag in the death rate, so the infections of today are the deaths of a month or two from now with only a small percentage being acknowledged in the figures. They're also bad in this country for downplaying the health risks of COVID, no info on the number of people who have already been left with long term or life long health difficulties from it as a result of infection. Despite a lot of discussion on the matter amongst the public and some media sites the virus hasn't mutated in any meaningful way. A small outbreak of a variant is said to have emerged in Indonesia but that version is supposed to be much worse than the standard COVID-19, not better.
In essence the situation is:
May - Warned the UK would be ****** in the Winter if it eased restrictions
June - Warned the UK would be ****** in the Winter as it eased restrictions
July - Heavily warned the UK would ****** in the Winter as it removed almost every remaining restriction
Aug - Warned the UK was going to be imminently ****** in the Winter as we encouraged social activities and bunched on beaches
Sep - UK begins to wonder why no-one warned it was beginning to look ****** for the Winter as even more social distancing is dropped
Oct - UK is ******
Seriously, cancel any big plans you have for Christmas. Hope the summer half empty summer beer gardens were worth it.

Younger people are not being careful. So a higher percentage of people who are less at risk are being infected now. We have the same here, as my mum likes to remind me as she gives me an earful - older people are basically having to stay more locked up because younger people are going out and getting infected, meaning a riskier environment out there.

We've seen bad behaviour from the clubbers on some of the Greek islands and even England footballers over the past week or so who basically don't give a stuff about the rest of us.

Kids have just gone back to school. Let's see where things are in a month.
