Tories lie about consulting with local leaders about new measures as they make the three tier system official. Liverpool enters Tier 3, Greater Manchester at Tier 2 and London at Tier 1 - Tier 3 is the most severe with Liverpool leaders livid and saying that they fear the damage it will do. Tier 3 bans households mixing indoors and pubs, bars, leisure centres and gyms all close.

Look forward to another two weeks passing and Boris announcing Tiers 4-6 given how lowball these measures are.

      Two things:
      1. The new thread name is great
      2. How the **** is London tier 1??

Same reason here in Ireland they locked down certain counties while most of the cases were in Dublin - it's the economy, innit? Give the impression of doing something while trying their damndest to keep the economy going.

While I could look over at my UK neighbours and tut-tut in the early days, we're in the same boat now. The health of the economy is what's important, not the health of people.

In 2025 the tiers will change to mean anyone in tier 2/3 have to work 7 day weeks and can only vote tory.
Then we will all have to start wearing badges to indicate which tier we belong to.

It's a non-sequitur though, if you've got a sick population you end up hurting the economy more in the long run as it draws out the problem. This is exactly the outcome in the 1918 flu pandemic where things were opened up early and the same thing is happening again here.

Exactly this! This is what baffles me about the entire thing. What's going on now is a slow death of the economy which could end up being devastating if the cases go out of control. Rather than actually tackling it properly.

And yeah, reading into the Spanish Flu is a real eye opener because, in my head, it was something so removed from our society, something from an era long gone, and yet there are so many parallels. It's like we learned nothing from that.

Good thing that history can teach us a lesson....

Because we're totally compliant with all the rules, all of the time. Experts and the utterly trustworthy talking heads on TV have told me this is so it must be true.

Anyway naughty Northerners enjoying being patronised, condescended to and told what to do. Gives them something to whinge about when they're not beating their whippets and eating bread and dripping.

Truth is that picking on Liverpool and Manchester is 'safer' because they're almost 400 miles away. So if all kicks off Boris and his shambles will have time to hide. He needs to keep us Londoners sweet.

Well, Brexit is effectively *done* so COVID etc will all Northern voters will care about in the next GE so that huge lead the Tories had last time is dead. Knew they'd waste no time blowing that advantage

                      Came here to:
                      1. congratulate neon on the thread title
                      2. Say well, well, well to dog thang as we welcome Ireland to the same mess as the uk

Cummings supposedly knows ‘people’ but he clearly doesn’t. You can get the masses to do pretty much anything, as long as it’s not for too long. Like you could have literally told everyone they had to stay at home and the army would be bringing their food to them and they couldn’t go out. Anywhere. And you could do that for a fortnight, close the borders, COVID dies and then open back up. What you can’t do is drag stuff on and on. Cummings knows nothing.

I don't know how often he wears it but someone pointed out he has an interesting neck chain / lanyard thing. It's not issued by this county.

So the Spitting Image representation of him being an alien, could actually be true.

The Circuit Breaker concept was always broken, two weeks lockdown would make minimal difference and wouldn't be taken as seriously as the full one. Best case you get a relative break in numbers but by the time enough days have passed to notice figures would be on the increase again. You'd need to circuit break regularly every 3-4 weeks to just maintain the existing level which would probably be economically worse than one shutdown that dealt with it completely.

Ultimately we're going to end up back in the situation where a long national lockdown is the only way to drag things back from the brink and when it happens it's absolutely imperative that this time Boris etc suck it up and hold it till the infection rate is essentially nullified and - keep damned travel from and to other countries closed till the proper time. Do that and the economy etc can keep open all they want in 2021.

                              .
So why is Ireland's pub sector in lockdown? with Irish pubs being a huge part of the Irish economy and one hasn't got to look back as far as Spanish Flu, we had Hong Kong Flu in the late 60's

Can't say I really thought that much of the new spitting image - it was okay, but the Greta Thunberg stuff, it's just not appropriate to be satirising that message. It's trivialising climate change and essentially saying it's okay to mock Thunberg for trying to make people listen. The rest of it, fair game because of the BS the politicians spout, but they really need to drop Thunberg as it's really badly judged - they should be satirising climate change denial.
