It's crazy how powerful the AI features of the new Pixel phones are.

The Verge have an article about it with some pretty dire warnings about the future of the integrity of images as evidence:

Putting aside the ethical implications and focusing purely on the technology though, it's pretty crazy what it can do with a few prompts:

I saw an ad for it over the weekend at the cinema which was basically just a long list of these kinds of advanced prompt-based image features, like adding yourself into a photo of friends after the fact. Honestly, it's a genuinely impressively step forward. Apple have a lot of work to do to catch up. Most Apple Intelligence features won't launch until next year, and even then the 'Image Playground' features are focused on generating the kind of bland, cartoony airbrush art that we're all familiar with at this point from Midjourney and others - not this kind of advanced photo manipulation.

The mobile AI wars are going to be very interesting.

It's even more crazy when you consider that Google are considered generally to be behind in terms of generative AI. It's actually scary.

To be fair, The Verge have consistently been making this argument about photo/video editing features on phones like Pixel well before AI came onto the scene (remember that the Pixel 6 introduced Magic Eraser) and it's a pretty compelling one.

At this point, what even are photos and/or videos taken with smartphones if they can then be edited to a considerable standard to create moments that simply didn't happen? It's Orwellian, especially in the context of an upcoming US Presidential Election.

Yeah, while this kind of thing has been possible for a long time with a copy of Photoshop and adequate skills, being able to do it on a phone with a few text prompts is a pretty seismic shift in terms of accessibility.

Genies out the bottle now, but the question is, SHOULD people have this kind of capability instantly at their fingertips at all times? No good will really come of it.

That's precisely the argument that The Verge have been making in the last few years as image editing has improved on smartphones, even before AI was factored into the equation.

It gives your kids the instant ability to create a murder scene in your house or school, is just one thing that comes to mind.

Or if you don’t like someone at work, hit yourself to make some bruises and ai them into a fake attack on you for a lawsuit.

Or...to easily facilitate the spread of massive disinformation for political purposes....I wonder if there is anything coming up, like, across the Atlantic Ocean??

Or just erase some war crimes, see those bodies? No you don’t, prove it 🤷‍♂️

Year, absolutely no good whatsoever will come from it.

Well the problem is actually the other way around. Photographic evidence is not going to be admissable soon,. unless they find a way to differentiate.

Well that goes both ways though? Anything the government, private traffic, anything, you can just say that’s doctored ai footage and it’s staged, case dismissed. Which of course they won’t let happen, so it will have to work both ways.

We will soon get to see what Apple do regarding generative AI on their smartphones.

                          iPhone 16 series launch event announced for Monday 9th September, 1PM ET / 10AM PT / 6PM BST UK / 7PM CEST.

I bought a bloody iPhone 15 Amateur a few months ago and that turned out to be the very last iPhone they'll ever make that won't get the AI features. The 15 Pro is compatible. The 15 Amateur is not.

Oh well. No goofy airbrush AI art for me.

I wonder if Apple might try to sneakily row back on that.

Google crowed a lot about certain Pixel features only being possible with Tensor but those features (Magic Eraser, for instance) have ended up on older Pixels and other Android OEM devices.

That would be nice. It seems clearly artificial to me that some of the less advanced advertised features wouldn't work on the one I have, to be honest. It's not really the end of the world but I found it a little bit irritating as I'm normally pretty good at buying at the right time.
