Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe has been confirmed to have died following an assassination attempt whereby a gunman shot him twice in the back with a homemade shotgun
Is this really a comparison here?

And they have almost zero gun deaths per year, in a country twice the population of the UK and maybe a quarter the size of the US.
Honestly it's a great advertisement for strict gun control.

It was a similar situation when Jo Cox (MP) got killed near me, it didn't really get out much into the national press but the gun itself was a bolt-action air rifle used for pest control that the killer fashioned into a crude handgun. Onlookers thought it was some old pirate-era gun. It had to be used pretty much point-blank, but even then he still had to use a knife.
It's not comparable to America, where there's an insistence that people should have free access to basically military-grade hardware to stop burglars, which is honestly like a lethal version of kids wanting a high-end gaming rig to do their homework.
