Mars programmes are likely to improve crop growth on Earth, given being able to generate food to survive is going to be an important asset to sustained presence on the planet. And not just potatoes.

That doesn’t make the exploration worthless of course, because it’s a step in a far greater journey we’ll have to take at some point. And as Marty says, so much tends to come from this kind of exploration.
But it’s also important to remember that Musk is a total knob. That’s a key thing here.
