I can live with cinemas fleecing on food and drink as they've never stopped you bringing in your own stuff either, they very much need to gear toward accessibility and therefore being clean/well maintained and low cost is key.

Simply make it pleasant, scrap IMAX and all good.
Our local Odeon has time tiered pricing so tickets can be anywhere from £6-15 each but the pass is £15 per month so it's an easy thing to use and getting regular attendance is half their battle. A sub at one cinema likely means a lost customer at another.

I used to know someone that worked at a big cinema chain, and he said they were going to, but it created too many problems.

Supposedly this is why all the cinemas (or at least most of them) renovated to add a bar, with beer etc. on tap. It's not for the bar itself (though some of them made that work), it's because by being a licensed premises they have extra legal backing to insist it's against the law for you to consume your own food and drink on the premises.

But in practice this just created a PR nightmare and they abandoned the idea.

I'm fascinated by the figure Ofgem gives of 79% of adults watching TV News. Given TV's typical audience figures I'd love to know how they break that down and its bearing on the BBC needing so much rolling coverage

The Sherborne, an independent Gloucester Cinema in art-deco, traditional style. Great prices and no adverts! Kingsholm, UK

            Been going since 1880. £5-£7 a ticket. 4K screen.

The issue is cineworld, not cinemas in general.

Our cineworld is run by children, the popcorn is stale and the toilets stink. I’ve had to get the projectionist to set the right aspect ratio more than once. They deserve to die. I just hope someone better takes over and does things properly.

Cinema prices here are 2300 yen if going for the Dolby Atmos set up which is basically 15 quid. I don't have an issue with that. Plus, the cinemas here often have special days. For example, the first day of the month is half price.
We can't bring in our own food but I do. I'll still buy popcorn and beer from the cinema though. Beer because I need the glass for my own cans

I thought I was good for sneaking food in, but beer? What a pro.

This reminds me. I did once have the projector just turn off mid film at Cineworld. Someone went and complained and they started the film from the beginning. We just walked out. I think it was during the 2nd or 3rd Transformers film so nothing lost.

Cineworld at my nearest one (Basildon) has been excellent for iMax viewings. There’s nowhere else local for an iMax so guess ill just stop going cinema completely.

                          That's my one too
Went there the other day with Chloe to see the new Minions movie & it's still a nice place to go
I don't really go often enough & the last blockbuster I saw was Rise of Skywalker in 3D IMAX & enjoyed the experience

I do wonder how our new Empire will fair in the town centre when it finally opens this year as it's been in development since before the pandemic & I honestly feel it's going to be a dead thing before it even opens as viewing habits have changed & just a massive waste of money

Bladerunner 2049 & Dune were absolute experiences at iMax. I saw new topgun in their new screenX which was a novelty recently, iMax is much better though.

We also have a boutique, arty fatty cinema called Tivoli. They do a really cringe little speech before the movie you’re about to watch, then, as the movie starts, the various meals that people have ordered are brought in and the staff faff about in front of you serving it all up, WHILE THE FILM IS ON. When they’ve finished you’re finally allowed to enjoy the movie on average sized, mediocre quality screens with what is either low budget audio equipment or poorly set up audio equipment, or both. And you get to pay £20 for this privilege.
