    UK Energy Costs

Just had an email from my gas and electricity supplier about the rise in prices starting in April.

If anyone here in the UK is struggling already or has a heart condition then prepare yourself for some devastating increases.

Gas up over 75% and electricity just under 33% per unit with the standing charge on both increasing too 4% for gas and 58% for electricity per day.

    Its bad.

My bank contacted me yesterday to tell me my mortgage payments will go up. By 14p a month. That's one less egg a month for me I guess now, the bastards!

I've not heard from Scottish Power yet. Our plan ended about 3 months ago and we haven't done anything about it yet because there's no point. I'm bracing myself.

The costs of charging a car vs fuelling are gonna narrow down real fast at this rate

We've been lucky so far as we've locked in our mortgage, gas and electric for a few years so the price rise shouldn't effect us. When it comes up for renewal though, I imagine we'll be kicked in the teeth.

I'm already noticing our weekly food shop has significantly risen for the past few months, my heart goes out to those really feeling the pinch. These past few years have started to feel like a bit of a dream. Although far from perfect, I do keep looking back fondly on my teenage years in the 90's where everything felt like an oppertunity.

2022 is a far more darker place.

Can only see prices increasing further given supply is likely to get worse due to the Russia/Ukraine war.

Unit prices haven't increased as much as they could have, but standing charges per day have doubled at "Bulb" (it's not really Bulb anymore given they've gone bankrupt).

Edit - after a paper towel calculation, think it'll push my bills up by about £60 a month.

It’s not that bad yet. I’m still getting 4 hours of electricity at night for 5p per kWh. That’ll change later in the year though. At present it’s about £3 for 200 miles.

My updated figures came through this week & Mines going up as I've never been on fixed tariff & always just stayed on standard variable

My Electric going up from £55 to £75 per month
Gas up from £51 to £80

Not great by any means but it is what it is & we'll manage

For some families, it will hit them right where it hurts: their figure-buying. Right, Neil?

Our current (SSE standard tariff) is:

                      Electric - 20.68kwh / 24.11 standing charge

                      Gas - 4.17kwh / 26.12 standing charge

Can't see anything on SSE website about price increases either

Ha ha yeah something like that, will have to cut back to one a month or knock a Blu-Ray or 2 on the head instead

Interesting the differences; I'm with Bulb too and the figures they sent me are:-

Electricity: 20.860p/kWh up to 29.239p/kWh and 24.007p to 37.918p for the standing charge.

                            Gas: 4.005p
/kWh up to 7.344p/kWh and 26.112p to 27.219p for the standing.

I wonder why there is a difference in the Bulb figures: region? Looks like I'm paying about 2p more /kWh for my electricity but 5p less /day standing charge. Gas standing charges are the same but differences in the /kWh for gas too although roughly the same increase.

The price hike is depressing. Too many people already have to choose between food or heating. Next winter many more will be in that unenviable position, some of whom will be very old or have newborn babies and so more susceptible to cold-related illnesses.
