Yep, the leadership contest was a bit like being given this choice:

Sunak would have undoubtedly lost the next GE, the damage to the Tories was already heavy and he lacks all the appeal and charisma etc to win one but things would have chugged along till then. All the others were forms were varying degrees of scandal and collapse waiting to happen. The party is utterly exhausted of options for a generation now and until they crash and manage to exorcise the ERG types and return to some sort of credible centre-right platform they won't see office again

You’re right. But I think everyone needs to stop kidding themselves that things actually would be better with him. This is like the swell for Johnson again. Just because someone is utterly terrible doesn’t make the others any less than terrible.

Absolutely. They wouldn't be good with him but they'd likely be more of the same of what we already had but without the scandal of Johnson as opposed to Truss' lighter fluid and a match to a stack of cash like Joker approach we have now.

          Its this Government.
Brexit happened because Cameron was getting pressure from his MPs to either step all in to the EU or leave. He was confident that the UK wanted to stay in the EU and held a referendum so the choice wasn't on his head. Unfortunately he and the government didn't do an adequate litmus test of the WHOLE of the UK and was shocked to find out that 51% were told by the Daily Mail that everything is Europe's fault.
Brexit is 100% on Tory heads.

Between Brexit and now, sure world events have happened and we had a pandemic (something which hasn't happened before), but unfortunately being a government of a country means that **** is always happening and you need to respond properly to said ****. Instead we saw open corruption and flouting of the law at a scale and boldness never seen outside south America.

The Tories will forever say that they were unable to govern in the way they would have liked because 'This and that' happened and it was a difficult time, but ALL periods of time are difficult times. They've been a complete shower of ****.
