Eh, sorry for the outburst, but living in being a foreign worker really changes your perspective on a lot of things, you try to behave better than regular citizens but you're always the scapegoat for everything.

That’s basically how my gf feels after living in Britain since 2015. Has to listen to colleagues being openly racist every day, praising Cruella Bravermann, going on “send ‘em back” rants, doing bad imitations of foreign colleagues’ accents to their face, etc. Media, and politicians of left and right blame foreigners constantly. I don’t envy either of you.

The Judge finds Trump guilty of engaging with the January 07th Insurrection - but won't punish him for it. The best takeaway from this outcome though is that this is the first time that Trump has recieved a formal verdict specifying his guilt in the insurrection which may set some precendence for the bigger cases yet to come

It was a civil motion, so the judge didn't find him guilty of anything and he wasn't named on the case either, it was against the Colarado state - the other cases against him aren't directly charging him as enacting an insurrection. The outcome of this is a very narrow technicality, it's not going to have a lot of bearing on his other cases.

I'd hope it would help further the chances of him losing the election as the insurrection is brought closer to association to him

40% of Argentinians currently live below the poverty line. Inflation is 140% - the Argentinian Peso and economy are both utterly f----d.

Javier Milei is an absolutely nasty piece of work to put it lightly (the fact that the orange one was the first to come out amongst many other far-right political leaders and publicly congratulate him on his victory says it all) but let's be clear: The Left have been in power in Argentina for decades. Peronism has failed the very people that it was established to benefit.

Voting for Milei is voting out of sheer desperation. We all know that a Milei presidency is not likely to go well but maintaining the status quo was no serious option. His opponent, Sergio Massa, was the incumbent finance minister, ffs.

The only good part of the info I've read on it seems to be that despite winning the election he holds limited power to impose what he wants. It's nuts just how bad the political landscape keeps getting.

It's almost like the consistent end result is that we end up with a Milei or Bolsonaro or Trump or Orban or Duterte or etc (insert your favourite far-right populist here) if left-wing and centrist governments repeatedly fail the very people that they were elected to serve.

It shows how naval gazing the public can be as well. For a nation like Argentina, they might not like the status quo but they're in the position of being able to see how badly this voting approach pans out in other nations. Only worse is coming for them now.

Again, it's a vote out of desperation. Not difficult to grasp. Nothing to do with naval gazing. How can it be naval gazing when the incumbent government have had the majority of time in power since the Argentine dictatorship of the late 70s/early 80s and pretty much used all of that time to trash the economy and leave 40% of the population in considerable poverty? On top to that, the current Argentinian government have had more than their fair share of corruptly putting their noses in the trough and filling their own pockets.

Again, I'm no fan of Milei but this was coming. Just like it did when Brazil went from Lula to Bolsonaro and just like it has done with how US politics now cannot rid itself of Trump, amongst many other examples in the world today. If the system isn't working for the people that it needs to work for, the naval-gazing comes from people who just expect them to vote for more of the same. Again, maybe those left and centre should focus more on actually getting stuff done to benefit their people?

Because it's taking an insular view. Desperate as they might be for change it's still an overlooking of the clear examples that they're setting themselves up for worse. Like being desperate for your rundown house to stop leaking and moulding so choosing the solution to be to set it on fire whilst you're still in it. Like you say, it's like the US's fixation on not letting Trump go - and just as toxic and wrong. Voting for a Far Right group won't change the one on the left, they'll just wait till voters come running back when they see how bad it will get moving forward. Solving the political dilemma they're in is a complicated issue but supporting a far right figure purely out of protest is a poor reason to vote when the price it comes with is that high.
