The NTSC-UK days.

Weird thing, was browsing the net and came across a 12 year old thread on rllmuk talking about ntsc-uk. Specifically it was about the massive amount of banning's that took place, but reading through it all and seeing those familiar usernames brought back some stellar memories.

Most wont know me here I expect but some might, so just thought I would check in and see what's been going on and maybe share some memories of those days which really were golden looking back.

Random things I recall:
- where else to kick off than starting the website itself along with rep and camps after Gameplay forum ceased to be. I basically knew next to nothing about web design but got myself a hookie version of Dreamweaver and pretty much copied the much-lauded Japanese website MagicBox, frames and all. Uploaded it all into One-and-One and it threw up a niche website that grew solidly over time.
- further to that, years later met Inertia who was a TOP guy and spent hours building a new database driven website for us with his ridiculous talents and never once asking for anything in return. He went on to create the amazing Aeon skins we see on XBMC and so on.
- managing to blag our way into the Nintendo show in London where we were amongst the first to get hands on the Gamecube, amazing day
- being sent an exclusive interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, a God to many of us back then
- hosting three (at least?) forum get-togethers in my two bedroom flat in Watford, probably around 25-30 gamers there for around 24 hours, set up multiple TVs and consoles. I used to have photos of these, wonder where they are now!
- talking JRMacumber the guy from America out of giving Halo a 10 because everyone felt he was over-praising it (no-one had played it at that stage), with time gone by I felt bad about this one as its a total 10, just as he said it was.
- being in awe of Saurian and his incredible gaming ability, watching him dissect Psyvariar was something else. Met him a few times too, really great guy and cool as f*ck to boot!
- being the Edge 'website of the month'
- Rep's insistence that The Bouncer was a GREAT game despite everything pointing to the contrary
- the care and attention given to the reviews, there was some great writers there and I believe some went on to work in games journalism also.
- the elitism was at times of the highest order, ntsc-uk was at times a harsh place to step a foot into if you were a PAL gamer
- conversely, I consider it to be the best source for anyone at the time who was looking to import games, with members who would truly go out of their way to help newcomers, I am thinking of people in particular like Brats and so on

Forgive my ramblings, its half my lifetime away now and I figured where better to post them than the site to which took on the baton from ntsc-uk

Maybe others would like to share those memories too.

Please find those meet up pics! I came to one of them. I remember playing Sega Bass on the DC for the first time. Or was it Sea Bass on the Saturn?

GREAT to hear from you again.
Do you still have any of the retro kit? Do you still fancy Beyonce?

I remember the wirepay forum going down and everyone talking about where to go next and you or Camps maybe trying to gets everyone to move to ntscuk. I think. All a bit hazy.

You can still see the original site versions on the Web archive. And the forum version on domino

We're still NTSC-UK really, we just couldn't get the domain name

Great to hear from your again Marcus, it’s been a long time!

Hope you’ve been well?

Don’t get me started about NTSC-UK. It cost me a fortune in import games, modding Xbox’s, importing ludicrous Arcade sticks and getting into really heated arguments about things that really weren’t important. But 60hz full screen was important to me!

Love Bordersdown and it’s my online home but I do miss the buzz of the early days but with all games becoming standard, from release dates to optimisation, that font of knowledge is just isn’t needed anymore. So that enthusiastic community has been disbanded.

But the hardcore remain! Get the Silent Hill bunny slapped on your avatar, it’s nice to see you back.

Welcome back, Marcus. How have you been? I’m sure we could arrange a big mass banning to make it feel like the good ol’ days.

Complete turn around on the bannings. It's far easier to be banned there now than here.

We only ever banned people who were being deliberately disruptive and making posting on the forum miserable for others, and if all you ever did on the forum today is ****-post, you'd still get banned here.

Also, we don’t take kindly to strangers in these parts, spits into spatoon while polishing his shotgun.

It may not have even been the banning themselves. It was how they were handled and the atmosphere. There was a phase (maybe it was quite short) where the vibe was very antagonistic and that just riled people up which, in turn, led to more bannings and an even worse vibe. Thankfully it totally chilled out and then became a much nicer place to be. I don’t miss those days.

Welcome back Marcus! Not sure I went to any of your gatherings (maybe one), it's more the ones at Charles' I have better recollection of. Maybe the photos will reveal the truth heh. Came to NTSC-UK about six months after it opened looking for an answer to my import b/w woes, worked out the answer myself (no, it wasn't that the TV couldn't handle NTSC, it could, it was just the AV port was set to composite when I was trying to feed it S-video!), but decided to stay as it seemed a good place to chat about import games. That was October 2001 I think!

I signed up so that I could buy Saturn Battle Garegga from Marcus after his friend passed away and left a collection behind.

I stayed for the F-Zero GX time trials and discussion, and yes, went to two Marcus meets. One in September 2003 (iirc), and another in October 2004. That was my first proper time being around like-minded non-Northerners.

I’ve got so many favourite memories of the NTSC-UK era but my favourite was the Xbox port of Outrun 2.

We had the Producer at Sumo on here, review codes given (I believe) everyone here adoring the game and stunning port. NTSC-UK’s review? 6 / 10.

It was brilliant, I think no one truly recovered from that!

I seem to remember the Out Run 2 review causing a lot of upset. I had a brief spat with RevStu trying to defend the review after he pulled it apart. I think it was that game, memory of it is sketchy now.

The site went from a small hobby into what at times felt like a full-time job. It was just SO involving, but it was also really rewarding too. In the end I got fed up of the infighting between certain staff members and after it eventually came to a head for me and I knee-jerk-quit over having to deal with (yet another!) argument this time involving the guy who loved the mecha stuff, I was surprised how little resistance there was in terms of my leaving all things considered and it turned out that the next person in charge had little intention of allowing me back once the dust had settled. I was bitter for a while, but looking back I think I needed that time away, some crappy stuff had happened in life.

dataDave yes that was Julian (AlphaCentauri) who sadly passed, makes me sad to this day and it left a hole in me that will never be filled. He was one of my best friends but he suffered from a horrible psychological disease that, were it happening today, I feel he would probably have got the right help he needed to get through it. Strangely, I now live in the small town he lived in, and I visit his grave from time to time. He was passionate about gaming, he even got a job working for Namco which I was highly jealous of. He took me to his office once and showed me an early build of Soul Calibur with only a few characters, it was mind-blowing even in that state. We met through gaming, I got chatting to him when he worked at Game as he had put imported games like SF onto the big screen there, pretty funny as those imports wouldn't of been for sale in the shop itself for at least six months. His games collection was also second to none.

Its bugging me where I have the photos from the meets, I swear I have seen them somewhere, I don't appear to have them digitally but then of course I imagine I probably didn't own a mobile phone way back then! ^_^ I will have a look the loft at the physical photos I have, perhaps they are there and I will share them for you guys.

I still enjoy games btw, pretty casual but sometimes something comes along and I get hooked. After five attempts I have finally got No Mans Sky to click for me, and I pootle around in that during those times where there isn't anything better to do. I am so glad I lived through that whole importing era, whilst things may well be much more accessible these days there is nothing that recaptures the feeling of waiting for that imported game to drop through the mail. I feel very much the same about how I used to go to Soho each month to buy the latest imported vinyl 12" releases from the US, really great days and I feel blessed to have been able to experience that.
