    BPX084: Oil Be Back

UK approves North Sea oil drilling plan welcomed by industry, but activists say will ‘shatter climate commitments’ | South China Morning Post (scmp.com)

A new oil drilling plan being approved by the UK will 'shatter' climate commitments it's claimed.

This goes against the campaigning of groups like Just Stop Oil

Rishi Sunak backs Rosebank oil and gas field: We don’t reach net zero by ‘wishing it’ (msn.com)

But Sunak says that having a domestically based oil and gas field is essential in the long term realistic plan to reach net zero whilst securing domestic fuel access. Labour have said that they wouldn't approve the field but more notably won't overturn any approvals once they get into power.

Is the clear cut campaigner approach still the right one or - frightening as it is to write these words - is the Government right that any real path forward needs to accept fossil fuels aren't going to go away entirely?

Eventually, they will because it'll get to the point where it's just not needed/has become uneconomical to extract them.

New processes are being found in order to manufacture things like steel/concrete - but if we were to halt all fossil fuels today, you'd have societal collapse - what Just Stop Oil wants is not achievable or practical at present. It's simply idealistic, and that doesn't solve problems.

I don't think we should be prioritising investment in increasing extraction over investment in alternatives however.
