The Berlitz Pocket Guide to Japan has a decent phrasebook in it, and it's not a bad book. If you're only coming to Kanto then get the Pocket Guide to Tokyo instead, it covers the area around too.

As neoboy259 pointed out they are called Soccer shop Kamo they are everywhere in Tokyo etc so don`t worry about finding them, brilliant shops but some kits can be expensive. I spend too much money at these stores . The Harajuku one is smaller than some, but is easy to find just walk out the main station exit and Kamo soccer is infront of you.

Thanks, JU! I've just bought that from the UK Amazon site. I bought another phrase book this morning by BBC Active . Can't hurt having two, eh?

No worries anytime. It can never hurt to have too much . Try not to worry too much though it`s good to use Japanese when you can, but Japanese people will try to help you in English if they can and usually speak a bit. But yes I think a phrase book is essential especially in certain situations.

jesus, reminds me when we first went, i had two phrase books, about 3 guide books and a notebook full of handwritten phrases.

And I lugged them around everyday for a week with all my travel gear.

Then I resorted to the international language of gesturing and pointing instead!

Hmm, how much is the average PS2 game in Japan? Fancy picking up J.League Winning Eleven 2008 on my travels. How much in Yen, just to give me some scope?

I've got the Lonely Planet phrase book and I'm taking my PSP with Talk Man, which has been really useful in teaching me how to pronouce things in the phrase book. It's really handy in that if you don't understand the response you can just hand them the PSP and they can select the answer and it'll say it back to you in english... it's bloody smart!

Or failing that, the least you'll get out of them is a quick game of Tekken

If you go to the big shops it'll be 6000-8000yen. I doubt you'll find it much cheaper, but shop around BEFORE buying.

                          Tsutaya, man! Tsutaya! Used goodness!

i've given them bonus points for having karei naru ichizoku in stock

GEO is more likely to have games than Tsutaya.

I think new release PS2 games are usually around the 6000 yen mark.
