I think this question's in the right place.
I'm off to Japan to teach in a couple of months and will be staying in student digs. As I have to do a lot of sittign around a couple of mates recommended I get a cheap TV to hook a Super Famicom etc. up to. So my question is, is it possible to buy cheap CRT Tv's in Japan? Or has it gone LCD/Plasma crazy? And either easy what's the cheapest possible option for buying a small (14" ish) T.V over there?
    Cheers

Looks like I'll be going after the summer this year, I got £500 worth of holiday vouchers from work because we had a good Christmas, and if they're for the likes of Thomas Cook, or better yet an online travel agent it should cover pretty much my whole cost of flying!

I read this thread back in 2004 like a book, and remember seeing something called Sakura Hotel mentioned, seems like it's good prices and looks okay.

      Has anyone been there recently?

If you want a really cheap TV take a trip to a 'recycle' shop. A second hand shop to you and me. You can easily get a 14 inch CRT for a couple of thousand yen.

Yes, but only for a night, it was the same as ever, besides the fact they now do rooms by the hour.

Useful, as there didnt seem to be a lot of love hotels in Jimbocho

if you havent got any other option, sakura hotel is fine.

but i had the worst nights sleep there, possibly in my entire life. The walls are paper thin, and if you have a snorer next door, youre utterly ****ed.

In fact, the bastard next to me sounded like he was operating heavy machinery all night. He couldnt have been human.

Ah right, would I have many choices for places at ?30 a night, or perhaps ?40 at a push? I mean I just want somewhere to sleep and keep stuff, since I'd be out almost all the time.

I liked Sakura hotel very good. I can also recommend Kimi Ryokan as it's as cheap and right in the centre of Ikebukuro.

I`ve just got back from my second trip to Kyoto and ncl HQ visit. This time however I also visited the old skool ncl HQ also in Kyoto which many old timers here will recognise from the SFC days from UK mags. I don`t like Kyoto at all (does nothing for me) but visiting ncl always makes it worth it. I made a video here:

7 weeks until I fly now!! So excited...but if I'm honest I'm at a loss for things to go and do. I've wanted to go to Japan for so long but now I'm finally going I'm having some difficulty deciding where to go and what to see. Can you guys help me out?

It's kind of a late honeymoon too so as much as my other half likes shopping for games (honest) it would be nice to do some "normal" stuff too. So far I have:

                      1. Visit Akiba and track down a PS3 and various gaming goodness
                      2. Visit the aquarium
                      3. Walk through Ginza on a lazy afternoon
                      4. Visit a Shinto Temple
                      5. Visit Tokyo Tower

It's also my Wifes' birthday whilst we ar out there too so if you chaps can suggest a really nice relaxed place to visit / spend a day chilling out I would be very grateful.

                      Cheers.

Goto Shibuya/Yoyogi Park on a Sunday.

Exit Shibuya Station, turn right and walk up the hill until you see the bridge, walk over the bridge, which is normally heaving with cos-players, and you should see Yoyogi Park I think it's called.

On a Sunday, you see many people relaxing, bands lined across the side of the park playing music, people playing sports etc. Really lovely place.

Also, check this out, as well.

Media Land is probably the best out of this lot, they always tend to have good deals outside the store, so you can pick up some decent bargains.

Oh, make sure you visit Yodabashi Akiba as well. Love that place.

Cheers Bleeders, I actually stumbled upon this page a couple of days ago when randomly searching Google for "akiba game shops". Great minds think alike I guess

The only thing I keep thinking now is "oh God, am I going to have enough money?"

                            Thanks for the ideas.

                              seconded.

we need to find a map and give instructions for ordering the kogashi tantanmen from Komen on the restaurant floor.

Seriously - your taste buds will orgasm - best Ramen i've ever had.

Simple tip when buying a PS3:

Go to a big shop like Yodobashi Camera or Bic Bic and first ask for a point card. Don't forget to bring some sort of ID and the adress of your hotel or something. Then buy your PS3, you will get 10% on your point card. Walk back in, and get yourself that free game from the point card.
