Shame it won't make him play any better, seriously overpriced panic buy if there ever was one.

?750M for ten years, that is one hell of a deal, and the cynic in me would said Fair Play rules, but guessing they won't apply to Man U in a big way any way.

The only time sponsorship deals might fall foul of FFP is if they seen as a dodgy "mates rates" deal as a way for rich owners to pump cash into the club via a connected company. Like if Roman Abramovich owned a Russian airline that started sponsoring Chelsea for double the amount any other club was getting, FFP would (in theory) curtail such a deal.
Sponsorship deals like this though do show that while FFP should stop clubs from spending money they don't have and doing a Portsmouth (which is to be welcomed) it's also going to further entrench the current elite at the top of the game.
Just from their kit deal (?75m per year) and shirt sponsorship with Chevrolet (?53m per year) Man Utd will be turning over ?128m per year. Big clubs like Everton, Newcastle, Aston Villa, don't even turn over that much each year IN TOTAL. Even Spurs total income isn't that far ahead (it has been around the ?150m per year mark for the past few years).
It's going to get harder and harder for the clubs outside the current elite to try and break in to that group. I can only see the gap getting wider each year. Yeah you'll get the occasional "lesser" club overachieving one season, or a "bigger" club having a surprisingly poor season, but that too I think will happen less and less in the future.
It's not a surprise that all the big clubs like Munich, Man Utd, Chelsea, etc., were in favour of the FFP rules. It cements their position at the top and makes it nigh on impossible for anyone new to gatecrash the party.Last edited by EJG1980; 15-07-2014, 13:10.
