Steve McClaren sacked by Newcastle and replaced by... Rafa Benitez????

Rafael Benitez is named as Newcastle's new manager on a three-year contract, following the sacking of Steve McClaren.

Great coup for Newcastle. There can't be very many examples of a team fighting relegation (for several seasons) who manage to persuade a Champions League winning manager to join them.

So weird that he started the season in charge of Real Madrid and will finish it trying to save Newcastle from the drop!

One useless manager for another useless manager . One should almost feel sorry for the Newcastle fans, but they're a huge part of the problem

I won't agree with you on Rafa, but I will agree in general about Newcastle fans and their lofty expectations...
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Benitez may be overrated but he isn't ****. He's actually a genius taking a job that is insanely difficult and he can walk away if he fails.

Also Newcastle have cleverly engineed a big name manager to make it look like they give a ****.

Utter nonsense to the point where it's actually hilarious.

Overrated how? If anything he's very much underrated despite his CV.

Useless at Inter Milan, Real Madrid , didn't do much for Napoli and he'll screw up at no doubt Newcastle . Even Steve McClaren can win a Cup and League . Still the Spanish waiter is good for Cup runs I guess .

So Steve McLaren winning the Dutch League is greater than Rafa winning La Liga twice in three years with Valencia and winning the Champions' League and 2 UEFA Cups? LOL.

Think you'll find that he actually did a fair bit at Napoli, but don't let facts get in the way.

And do feel free to ignore that he actually didn't get time or backing or support at Inter or Real Madrid, never mind the fact that Real were second in La Liga and 5pts behind Barcelona when he got sacked. They are now third and 12pts behind Barca while being coached by Zidane.

In any case, your opinions are no surprise - you called Harry Redknapp a top-class manager on here.

                  Like I said, hilarious.

You're having a laugh on that score , Real Madrid really wanted Rafa and he had the full backing of the president . Just like with so many Clubs Rafa goes to , they soon find out how lame he really is . Newcastle will be no different

Think that would be more Jose Mourinho; the 'one' Liverpool really should have gone for when they had the chance . I would have liked to seen Harry given the England job though and he would have done a far better job , that said England aren't exactly a great team these days .

I think he's a good manager but not the be all and end all. Did well at times at Liverpool but under him I still found them mostly crap to watch. Winning the Champions League was a complete miracle.

I would say top four is a good chance, should scrape the playoffs next season. Might be some toughies at the likes of Rotherham and Burnley though and I'm a Newcastle fan

Yes, Rafa was lame despite having a win percentage of %68 during his brief tenure at Real (25 games managed, 17 won, 5 drawn and 3 lost). He was sacked because he wasn't galactico enough for a sh1thouse club with sh1thouse fans and a totally clueless president who clearly didn't fully back him as he was happy to sack him in an instant.

Equally clueless is the suggestion that Liverpool should've got Mourinho. LOL. With what transfer money? Considering that Mourinho is a total chequebook manager who doesn't develop any youth players (Rafa rebuilt Liverpool's youth academy from the ground up) and plays football that's even worse to watch.

So what you're saying is that Rafa should be right at home in Newcastle then, having experienced the same in Madrid?

Fit right in at Newcastle then .

Maybe that's why Liverpool have miles away from winning the title ? . Another set of fans that are deluded and living on past glory

Chelsea have a great youth system they don't play them lol. Rafa spend over ?200 Million , increased Liverpool wage by over 40%; he's hardly Wenger when it comes to brining in Youth or buying talent on the cheap . In fact isn't Rafa in the worlds top 5 for managers spending over the last 10 years ? .

Saying things that are false won't make them true. Sorry.

Great Chelsea youth system? LOL. What great players have come out of there and have made the first team consistently or had great club careers there since Mourinho first got there? Next to none.

Rafa sold nearly just as much as he spent during a time where Hicks & Gillette nearly pushed the club into administration.

59 players brought in six years, 72 sold.

?229m spent in transfers in six years, ?145m recouped from player sales. That equates to ?84m net spend, an average spend of ?14m per year on a side that he consistently kept top-four and challenging in Europe.

I'll wait for you to come back with more nonsense that simply isn't true.
