When I preordered the Gears Limited Collector's Edition tin online at HMV using their usual free delivery option it was in fact sent Royal Mail Special Delivery the day before release and arrived release day morning.

Just buy it from any shop on release day, asda or wherever. Play it on launch and then when the HMV copy comes just take that sealed copy back to the other shop with the reciept and get a refund saying that it's an unwanted present or whatever.

No. Barcodes are used to mark a product in a machine readable way. Its just a bunch of numbers that identify that product as being Gears of war 2. Its not a unique serial number per copy or unique to a certain store.
