Sturmwind review - New Sega Dreamcast Game!!

Taken from my site - http://www.segagagadomain.com

    Game Data
    Title - Sturmwind
    Developer - Duranik
    Catalogue No. - TBA
    Type - Horizontal Shooter

Where to begin? Well, as I said to Duranik, Sturmwind wouldn’t look out of place if it was released on the XBOX 360 under Arcade Live. It really does look that good. The use of fully animated pre-rendered backgrounds along with many graphical effects often only seen in demo scene tech demos really do make this one if not the most beautiful 2D Dreamcast game ever made. The attention to detail not only in the background but also to the enemy craft is amazing and don’t get me started on the boss characters. Man, they are massive and easily rival and sometimes surpass Cave’s efforts in games such as Death Smiles.

So we know Sturmwind looks like a dream but that means nothing if it plays poorly. Thankfully it doesn’t. The team behind Sturmwind certainly know their shooters and you can clearly see this with all the inspired ideas taken from games such as Axelay, R-Type, Gradius, Thunder Force and so on. So first let’s talk about the weapon system. You start the game with a choice of 3 weapons being a Vulcan type that’s heavily inspired by Axelay in that you can spread the fire around your craft by holding or releasing the fire button. A wider spread / wave style shot and the good old green laser style shot. Each can be fired forwards or backwards thanks to a quick tap on the weapon direction button which soon becomes a necessary part of the game play mechanics. That’s not to say the game is crazily hard but more that it has you on your toes at times.

I'm not sure when it will be released but you can see an awful lot of the game on my Retro Core show. Just head on to my site (link in the first post) click on the sturmwind feature link and you'll see the link to the video right there. Or you can just go to YouTube and type Retro Core 3 Volume 14.

Any chance this will make it on the likes of XBLA or PSN.
I love playing shooters but I don't have the DC setup in order to play this.

my thanks too for the review Yakumo. a very impressive game for a "homebrew" project. will definitely keep this on my radar and probably buy the nice Special Edition if the price wont explode on ebay.

is this a one man only production? who is this Duranik guy anyway?

Fointy Pinger is home to web developer Lewis Cave, who specialises in web accessibility and web standards. The site also contains pop-culture news and reviews, mostly centering around videogames.

Not sure how accurate but this site says development is now complete.

Been thinking about where they were upto with regards to finally finishing the game.

Fingers crossed it'll be released over the next couple of months or so.

                          Ok

Managed to put a few hours into this and its not too bad at all, albeit rather generic. After loading, there is an FMV movie which leads to a fairly basic menu with a normal mode with 16 stages or an arcade mode with 5. Its a real mixed bag of lots of different retro shooters (pulstar, blazing star, rtype etc (dont get too excited), but its really trying to emulate gradius v, which it fails on, looking and playing more like soldner x. Even played through the dcs superb vga box, its still abit over saturated colourwise and blocky. Music is a mixed bag too, with some decent euro techno mixed with some bizzare 8-bit plinky plonky vibes.

Gameplay is decent. 3 weapons, each which can be powered up, an rtype charge, fixed helpers like rtype (which can fire front and back), which can mow down the usual cannon fodder enemies. It looks fairly pretty, with good fmv style backdrops. The normal mode is long, and even has 'achievement/trophys', for the 360/ps3 generation.

Where the game game does excel, is the bosses, but even these are the usual 'mecha', but there are are interesting sea creatures and a gynoug inspired giant head.

There are a few neat touches, like being able to destroy some of the backgrounds (which start to flame) and, well i cant think of anymore. Nice to see the dc getting some love though, but this really should have been a psn/xbla release, coded to 1080p with lossless audio, but even that wouldnt have saved it from being soldner x's uglier brother.

At least its comfirmed one thing...no one STILL, can develop a shooter as good as the japanese...

Mine still has to be shipped, really annoyed on how Red Spot's handling preorders.
