  • The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers - Kickstart this

The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers - Kickstart this

Video games are nearly 40 years old, depending on where you start the count. For such a young industry, it has seen an incredible amount of diversity and creativity. There are a lot of books on various gaming subjects. Though as pointed out by John Szczepaniak in his Kickstarter campaign, there are not a lot of English-language books covering Japan. Only a handful, and usually focusing on Nintendo. There have been a lot of video game related Kickstarters, but John's has to be one of the most...

A system that was the birth place of some of today's biggest franchises in gaming, a system that pioneered many things in its lifetime. Its name? The Nintendo Family Computer. Although known as the Nintendo Entertainment System in the West, the Japanese counterpart was superior in every aspect. It is perhaps surprising then, that...

Ghost Blade CE available to pre-order for Dreamcast DC

The team over at Hucast, who previously released Dux for the Dreamcast (review can be found here), and are in the process of finishing up the sequal Redux, have released some screenshots and details on their newest DC title, Ghost Blade.

Boasting 5 stages the initial screens of this vertical shooter are certainly a significant step up in quality from Dux, and Hucast have opened pre-orders for a 300 print run Collector's Edition, which will include a soundtrack and Superplay D...

  • The Other Side to Video Game Patents

The Other Side to Video Game Patents

With Sega's recent lawsuit against Level 5 involving patent infringement there's been some debate amongst the gaming community regarding the validity of Intellectual Property(IP) law. Every so often the media picks up on a particularly high profile case such as this and when the patents are particularly broad it can cast an unfavourable light on such behaviour, particularly with the modern contentiousness of patenting software. But let's take a moment here - most business goes on behind closed door...

  • Commodore Amiga Retrospective

    Commodore Amiga Retrospective

It wasn't always the case that the Japanese had the games market sewn up, you know. With Microsoft's XBox currently fighting a grim war of attrition for second place against Nintendo's Gamecube, younger gamers could be forgiven for thinking that it seems like a suicidal mission - to take on the acknowledged masters of the art of gaming on their own terms. However, the Americans have tried this kind of trick before, and while it didn't amount to the success story that it deserved to be, Commodore's...

  • Radiohead KID A MNESIA Exhibition - Report
    by Adrian Purser
Appearing recently on digital storefronts, this digital exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary re-release and bringing together of Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac albums. It's been made in collaboration between the band and Epic Games, though it's also very quick to tell you that it is not a game, epic or otherwise. That, I think, is a mixture of nervous expectation-setting, alongside its creators selling both games, and what they've created, short.
Unless you're one of those sorts...

  • Datel Freeloader Review - Action Replay Gamecube Region Free disc
    by Charles R
Once upon a time, there was a Freeloader. It was late, as usual, but everyone waited with baited breath, because it promised much.

And so it came to pass, the Freeloader finally arrived, and oh what gifts it brought. The ability to de-zone everyone's Gamecubes. Finally, an easy (and cheap) way for anyone in the world to play games from anywhere else in the world. It was welcomed with open arms.
Datel, after many delays, have now released their de-zoning disc. Twice. The f...

  • Goldeneye N64 Retrospective
    by Archives
Describing the greatness of Goldeneye isn't the easiest task in the world. If you were to show it to a gamer who has recently been showered with PC First Person Shooters such as Far Cry, then they'd scoff at the low-polygon landscapes, the poor digitised textures of Robbie Coltrane and the frame rate equivalent to the IQ of a table leg. They'd be missing the point though, as levels such as "Surface" are the forebears to Far Cry's grand vistas.
Which leads us nicely into one of the reaso...

The selectable parts of these options all change, but we've translated what's in the screenshot anyway. • TGS 2003 - Tokyo Game Show Report
    by Archives
As a first visit to any kind of games show, it was going to be very interesting to see what all the fuss was about. I remember reading about the Tokyo Game Show among other shows in magazines years back and having a sense of delight and amazement. Did you ever dream of going to a game show in Japan? I'm sure it's something most avid gamers can associate with. On Sunday the 28th of September, my wife and I headed towards Makuhari messe from western Tokyo, a journey of 2 hours. When we finally ...
